Columbia SON MDE 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to start this thread for those who are all applying to the Columbia School of Nursing MDE program for 2019 Entry.

I figured we could all share our thoughts/ questions/ concerns here, or just use this to meet some new people ?

My name is Gurdeep, I'm from NY, and I'm a recent Grad from Binghamton University. Looking forward to meeting all of you ?

where did you find that national policy?

Well, for master's prepared nurses, they basically did more academic work than BSN nurses. That can be an edge to employers. Also, a lot of MSN grads go on to DNP programs, which will take them less time compared to BSN grads.

For NP programs, there's a national policy saying that all MSN prepared NP needs to now become a Doctor's prepared NP by 2020 or starting 2020. So MSN level NP is not up to the new standard anymore. So if you want to become an NP, DNP programs are highly recommended for pursuing your long term career as an NP. Otherwise, you will have to go back to school to transition to a DNP at a later time which is more work.

That simply is not true. If the change even happens, MSN prepared NPs will be grandfathered in. There is no evidence that acquiring a DNP degree either after certification (MSN-DNP) or as initial education for certification as an NP has any impact on the patient or system health outcomes. Most schools are making the switch but that also means the cost of tuition is higher.

Sorry, yes, I did not mean policy. Being grandfathered is what I intend to say.

Hello everyone! My name is Jeffrey and I graduated from the MDE program at Columbia and am currently in the first year of the DNP/ FNP portion. If you need further information I am generally pretty good at responding to questions each week, but if you're going to attend the visiting day, you'll get most of your questions answered there. In the meantime give me a shout with your questions, and I'll see if I can help! Best, JSB

@Jsbinnyc Hello! Thank you for offering to answer questions for us! I was wondering what your take is on housing- on vs. off, different buildings, if you have been happy with your choice, etc. Any information would be very helpful as I know housing in NYC can be very difficult to navigate. Thank you!

Hi! I'm currently on the waitlist and was hoping someone that was previously on it could give me some insight on it.

1. I know many decisions about the waitlist come back around mid-March, but are we told all at once like we were told about admissions decisions or is it one person at a time?

2. Is there a clear answer to how many people are on the waitlist?

3. Is there a good chance of me getting into the program?

Sorry I'm just really nervous and I just want to start planning but I can't cause I'm in limbo!

Yes I’d like to know this too...as I’m on the wait list as well. I heard there are around 50 people on it ..don’t know if that’s true. Also it is ranked so ur place on the list matters. I’m just crossing my fingers at this point

Yes, you're right. A lot of hospitals and hiring managers are confused about MSN prepared RNs. You just have to explain your degree and resume to them, work it to your advantage. Columbia created the MSN so that the terminal degree for NPs here is an DNP. They are pushing you to become DNP prepared RNs here. To be honest, I don't believe Columbia's programs is a good fit for people who just want to become RNs because the program is accelerated and the focus just isn't on bedside nursing here. But a lot of students end up leaving to work as an RN and it has worked out well for them.

Hey the_salty_cat, I have some questions about life after the program but it won't let me message you

They sent out an email on 6/4 regarding an update to the waitlist. I’m pretty sure no one got this email because my friend had to reach out to them and then they told her about this email. Maybe they are waiting to be contacted, IDK, check your application to see if there was an update on it. But basically no one was taken off the waitlist and you have to reapply for next cycle. Smh.
