Columbia SON MDE 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to start this thread for those who are all applying to the Columbia School of Nursing MDE program for 2019 Entry.

I figured we could all share our thoughts/ questions/ concerns here, or just use this to meet some new people ?

My name is Gurdeep, I'm from NY, and I'm a recent Grad from Binghamton University. Looking forward to meeting all of you ?

Hi!

Thank you for your willingness to help! I would love to talk and ask you a few questions regarding your application process, do you have an email that I could contact you?

Hi!

I'm currently in the 2018 cohort and just finished the Summer quarter. I have some free time and if anyone has any questions or concerns I'd love to help! Good luck with all your applications.

Hi! Thanks so much for willing to answer our questions. I'm pretty anxious about the price for Columbia, they keep giving us estimates in the 110-130 range. I was wondering if you could share any information regarding how much the "final" price is, as well as info on Financial aid, grants, scholarships from the school, or anything at all regarding mitigating the huge price tag. Thank you SO MUCH!

Hi there! I understand how you feel. The current MDE and DNP students, myself included, worry about the cost too and this topic is always on our mind. The tuition is no joke. It's also why, as I mentioned before, most students don't continue to the DNP program and leave to go elsewhere. We're graduating with more loans than the medical students next door and our salary will be much lower. This is just something for you to think about.

However, I would say the admissions staff was pretty upfront about the cost and there are no hidden fees, aside from the simulation fee we're required to pay now every semester. I can't remember the exact tuition price, but it was ~110k. I would defer to the school's projection of the cost. Scholarships ranges depending on their yearly funding and my cohort received ~24k in grants. I think they gave out more grants if you come from an underserved background. If I were you, I would apply to as many schools as possible, including state schools, and then decide which school best fits your career goals and needs.

Hi! Thank you for posting in this thread. I'm just wondering how do you like the program so far? Do you think the classes and professors are setting you up for success? I just would like some input this is my first choice school so I would love to be accepted!

I would say that the MDE program is okay. It's not terrible, and there is room for improvement. For the first Summer, classes were fine. The first Summer is intense because it's 10 weeks and you're taking 9 courses at once. The classes aren't difficult. You just need to manage your time wisely.

Most people did fine in them and we only had one class we didn't enjoy. I graduated from a strong research university and thought my undergrad upper division courses were harder. If you went to a good undergrad, then the MDE program won't be difficult for you because you'll be mentally prepared for graduate school. Some professors are wonderful and some are awful. But keep in mind this is normal in any institution you go to. I think what I and my cohort struggle with is the disorganization of the program. Faculty don't seem to be communicating with each other and there is no sense of support/advising/mentorship here. This is a big issue here and one thing that wasn't really emphasized during my visiting day and orientation here.

Has anyone done the Timed writing portion? I just finished the video essay, and was super nervous. Wanted to take a break before moving on to the timed writing, does anyone know what the questions are like?

I remember I was pretty nervous as well, but don't worry! ? To my knowledge, the timed writing questions were different for everyone. Some weren't even health care related topics. The questions are designed to get to know you as a person, so be honest and add your personality in your response.

Question for current students. At what point in the application process did you begin applying for scholarships? I'm assuming there are deadlines some of which may be before decisions are sent out. So I'm wondering if this is something I should begin looking into before February. Also, where do you find scholarships, what do you look for, etc.

We don't have a lot of time to look for scholarships. Most of my peers are taking out max loans...last year, the scholarship application came out at the end of December. The application was extensive and you had to fill out essays and give copies of your tax returns.

Thanks! The tuition is giving me heart palpitations and I haven't even sent in my application yet :/ This is the December of the same year the application is submitted?

I totally understand...I highly recommend you to apply to as many schools as possible. After you're admitted to these schools, then you can decide where you want to go. Don't worry about choosing a school right now. Yeah, December of the application year.

Hello! I'm wondering what other applicant's experience with the video essay was like. Of course I can't be sure, but I was extremely nervous for my video (CUSON is my #1 choice) and I think I rambled a bit. Also my voice probably sounded shaky as I was stumbling on my words. Did anybody have a similar experience? I'm concerned I may have blown my application with this one part.

Does anyone know if you have to do the video essay and timed writing right after each other or can you do the timed writing on a separate day?
