For all us ancient ones, how about remembering an oldie - aramine IV drip!
Was watching an oldie TV channel and Dragnet, Squad 51 (can't remember the real name, but it was with firemen/paramedics Gage & Desoto) and then Emergency came on. Some snakebite pt had bottomed out and was in the ER. All nurse Dixie McCall was doing was taking a manual blood pressure, handing the docs meds (that docs administered) and making phone calls.
No specific directions; just "an aramine drip".
I got the biggest kick watching the nurses walking around in their white uniform dresses and their white heeled shoes (beige pantyhose) and wearing their caps. (I am an antique nurse who loves nursing caps!).
So for you all you nurses out there, what are some of the obscure and oft forgotten meds that we all used to use at some time can you name???
Aramine precipitated this thread, but I also offer that oldie, aldomet. Any others???

I loved priscoline (tolazolaine) for pulmonary hypertension in NICU- I was enamored of the square bottle. :)

I remember aldomet. What about procanimide now not even in ACLS protocol. I also have never seen a lidocaine drip used to treat v tach. We now use amiodarone.

I never knew aramine was so old fashioned we use an aramine infusion as standard until the patients get a central line!
TY all for the comebacks. Also remember when Dilantin could be used as a last resort for ventricular arrythmias not responding to other meds.
I guess the blond paramedic on Squad 51 popping the caps off the Bristo-jets for lido wouldn't be so impressive anymore. I also remember procainamide. Just thought of 2 other old-timey meds that I hope to find in my drug book that I need to look up - now I'm hooked.

We used to puncture a capsule and give the liquids contents sub lingually for high BP. Was is Adalat?
and almost everyone was in Tagamet for stomach problems. Haven't seen that in years.
and Halcion! That used to be the drug of choice for sedation.

I loved "Emergency" ! (still do, I watch the oldies channel too) Gage and DeSoto were the characters on that show. I had a HUGE crush on Gage when I was in 7th grade. Thanks for making me smile today, I got a kick out of the aramine drip as well. (And you've gotta love Dixie the RN on that show - I always thought she was so glamorous!)

Few persons knew then or today that Julie London (Nurse Dixie McCall) had a career that spanned stage, screen, and bands before landing that role on Emergency. Her most famous hit was "Cry Me A River". Julie London - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So yes, guess you could say Nurse Dixie was "glamorous", but then again IMHO so were most of the other nurses in that series. Immaculate white uniforms that fit just right, and perfectly coiffed hairdos with caps that were perched just so and remained so for the duration of their shifts.

Had to look up a lot of these! Is anyone still using anidulafungin? Everyone uses to be on it when I started working BMT, but not I haven't seen it is years. Same with Primaxin.

And did y'all remember that Dr. Joe Early's actor (Bobby Troup) was married to Nurse Dixie McCall's actress (Julie London) in real life?
And their private affairs weren't splashed all over the tabloids, either -- that would never happen in this day and age!

John Gage (dark hair) was the one who popped off the caps; Roy DeSoto (blonde) was squirting air out of a syringe. (Ask me what my favorite show was when I was a teenybopper.)

Is it true that women who were in preterm labor often had alcohol IV drips to stop labor?
