Nursing student giving me the creeps.

Nurses Relations

Published

Not just me, either. Where I work we have a practical nursing class doing their rotation and I was approached by this very large, rough-looking guy with a shaved head. He was loud and crude, and when I would answer his questions he would say things like, "what a bunch of crap!"

He looked like he would be more at home in a biker bar than as a nurse. Now before anyone blows me to smitherines for "profiling" and stereotyping I want to say that I'm not the only one who thinks he is weird. I mentioned to another nurse I would not trust handing this guy the keys to a med cart and she totally agreed. I was surprised at my visceral response to this guy because I do not like to jump to conclusions about people and I know looks can be deceiving.

I've met plenty of big, rough-looking, bald men with tattoos and piercings, the majority are big sexy teddy bears.

Now if this student is being unprofessional or inappropriate while on the floor, you can report him to his instructor.

I mentioned "A Hall" and he said, "You calling me an A-HOLE???" (joking, I know, but you kind of expect someone to be a little more reserved, especially when you have first met them.)

They paired him up with one of our residents who is an old army vet with a foul mouth and they got along fabulously.

Well, I really don't care what he looks like. But when he asked a question and got an answer and then said "that's a bunch of crap" would have been my clue that he needs a little class in how to be a professional.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who caught that part of the post. I do not care what you look like if you give me a statement like that after I took the time to answer a question I would be ticked off. I have met big scary looking guys before that turned out to be the best nurses I have ever worked with, but they always treated me with respect.

Sorry, but if anyone gave me an answer like that, no matter what they looked like, they would be told to look up their own answers until they can talk to me with some respect. Especially, someone that I do not know.

Diane and JB, you beat me to it. Looks can be deceiving, but the mouth usually reflects the heart.

As other posters I would have been struck by his response rather than his looks. I know and have worked with those "big, bald, full of tattoos, peircing and looks like you wouldnt want to run into them in the alley" but turned out to be better nurses than the prim and proper hair in the bun type lol. Looks can be very decieving. Of course I am a "biker" and feel comfortable in a biker bar but I can also put on that fund raising formal and walk with the best of them with a little dermablend to cover my ink lol. It doesnt mean I'm a bad nurse by any means.

There are a lot of nurses who give me creeps...

I love how you had to throw 'sexy' in there! haha! :D:yeah:

9 times out of 10 I'd rather work with a big, bald, biker guy than a prim and proper "normal" looking female. And I'll admit, I said things are a bunch of crap before too. Oh yeah, more than once. And I completely laughed out about the "a hall" and "a-hole" thing. My sense of humor is a bit warped ;)

Maybe he feels like he needs to overcompensate for being a male nursing student (because of the stigma that's still attached to it) by acting all "manly" and obnoxious.

People like this need to be confronted in a kind way that will save their face and preserve their dignity.

Me too, and none of them are big, bald, rough looking men.

You know what, ANY student (or co-worker or anyone at work) who approached me with a question, then answered with "what a load of crap" would prompt me to say "I am not sure what type of answer you were looking for, but you are inappropriate".

This has nothing to do with a student's looks--it has everything to do with the student's attitude and general inappropriateness. I have had extremely well spoken, designer scrub students pitch a FIT at the thought of so much as touching a patient. "I am NOT doing THAT". Right in front of the patient (most with a DREAMMMMMM of being a CRNA or NP, so the goal is that they don't have to learn any hands on patient care). That is equally as inappropriate.

This is about a student who is inappropriate. Doesn't matter if they look like they stepped off a Harley, or out of a Lexus. Anyone that inappropriate wouldn't give me the "creeps" but would make me take pause and mention something to the clinical supervisor. When I was in school, behavior such as you describe would mean not passing clinical rotation. Period.
