Hello everyone,
So I'm feeling a little uneasy at the moment. I had started my CNA course and when I was about to finish I had an accident. This accident left it so that I could not work or go to school. In that time I had heard about "camming". Without putting much thought into it I signed up to a few camming sites. I figured that I could sign up for a few camming sites and if I decided that's what I was going to do then I would already have a few accounts set up. What didn't cross my mind at the time was 1099's and background checks. I never actually broadcasted myself so I never received a penny. I've read that companies aren't required to send a 1099 unless you exceed $599 but some companies send them regardless. My question is how badly do you think just signing up for these sites would effect my future in nursing? I'm hoping that I can call these sites and see if they will not send out 1099's to the IRS.
Thank you
If you break the law it'll be on your CORI. Violation, misdemeanor or felony--it'll be on your CORI.
This is how it often works, as I found out the hard way:
Corporation/hospital, hires an independent agency to do background check, credit check. The hiring company interviews and if they like you then they'll ask the independent agency to move on the data about you. If they find something that fits within the "reject for" list, that's it, you're toast. Most important--the hospital/corporation never even knows why. DWI, misdemeanor or felony, or a credit score below a certain number and you're toast. And the company only knows that you do not fit within their paramenters--they do not know if it's a credit issue or a DWI or felony. They DON'T want to know. This insulates them from any unfair practices lawsuit.
This is how I found out:
A few years back I became unemployed when the company that I was contracted to decided to go with the local hospital for Occupational Health Services. So I took some time off then started looking and got a wonderful interview, and then--dead air. Then got another wonderful interview: "this will be your office," and then--dead air. This happened over and over and one day I happened to be going past the place where I could pull a copy of my own CORI, as I had done many years ago. So I stopped after wondering...
There is was. A heinous crime--listed vividly on my CORI. Heinous, or at least it sounded heinous. Nobody saw that the crime was 30 years back. Nobody noticed that it was NOT a misdemeanor or felony but that it was a violation that had a whopping $50 fine. And nobody ever said: "Hey, why'd you lie about not having a criminal past?" Nope, all I got was dead air and no response to follow up calls....
Yup a $50 violation from 30 years ago cost me job after job. The day I found that on my CORI and it had NOT been on my CORI five years ago, I called the place that was considering hiring me and explained why it might appear that I had lied and that now I found I DID have a criminal record. They agreed that what was equivalent to an un-inspected vehicle ticket from decades ago was not a bar to hiring me and so I had a job, instead of dead air.
Interestingly when I confronted the State Police division and accosted them for making a violation read like something horrible they agreed and promptly added "Violation," to the item and changed verbiage to make it obvious that it was neither a misdemeanor nor a felony.
Also interestingly was when I went to my Superior Court, where the violation occurred, as part of the process to anull the horrid crime, they told me that they had no record of it, that it had been purged long ago. Surprise, surprise, so where did it come from--that darned Homeland Security I guess.....So...if anyone doesn't get hired and receives only dead air, you just might like to take a peek at your CORI.
As for the OP, who I'm not sure whose "crime" is real or faux, it's simple: If it's on your CORI, you're toast. If it's not, you're probably fine unless you were a Media star and somehow the agency reviewing you connected you.
Do be aware though that agencies will often review your Facebook account, your tweet history, and other social media. If there are photos of you toking up on a (let's assume faux) joint, or funnel drinking, or whatever... You may be deemed unsuitable by the agency, and if so--you are toast.
Honestly speaking, the best individual to answer that question is a lawyer. Not just any lawyer, but one who specializes in employment related circumstances in the field of healthcare. Most of the replies you will recieve will be a individual's personal views. On a topic of this nature, be ready for some serious criticism. I will say this, despite what decisions you have made in the past, I wish you nothing but the best. Always remember that healthcare workers are held to a higher standard. Eventhough we are human as all other occupational workers, we are expected to manage our life with carefullness and intentionality.
I'll offer a brief, genuine response, although I think maybe this is the same poster as the other thread. Maybe not. But anyway....I briefly dated a woman probably 16 years ago who was filmed performing on a sybian. She was paid $400. This was in 2000, I believe. We live in a small(ish) area and the site she worked for was a locally run site. To this day, she is known as the local Media star.
I think that all of the sex industry should be legalized and regulated. But those who work it also need to keep in mind there are consequences. If it's your life and your passion, then you go ahead and rock it. But if you have goals outside camming or Media, this will follow you. If you don't mind that, then go for it. Accept the consequences when there are some.
Well, I just got an education. I thought you meant "symian," not "sybian," but just for the fun of it I looked "sybian" up. All I can say is I lead a very sheltered life.
Camming. Just confirms my long-held suspicion that I lack sophistication.....I never heard of that before in my entire 55---oops, 56---years on this planet. LOL
Again, don't feel like the Lone Ranger!

I'm not going to look it up. No way. No how.
It's Seeking Arrangements. A neurosurgeon I used to work with often had very attractive younger "girlfriends". They would bring him lunch often. He was about 50 and his girlfriends appeared to be 20-30 and there seemed to be a different one about every 6 months. One late night in the ICU some of us guys where asking him about it. Without the slightest embarrassment he showed us his account. Just for fun we did a search of the women using the terms "nurse", "nursing" and "RN" using his account. It appears to me that about every second woman offering herself on that site is either a nurse, a nursing student, or a want-to-be nursing student.
There were at LEAST two strippers in my nursing school class. I don't think anyone should be surprised at all that nurses or want-to-be nurses are working in various aspects of the sex / Media industry.
Yet, the person using this site is an MD. So hasn't come up in his backround checks.....and younger girls traipsing into the hospital to bring him lunch...how appropriate is THAT.....double standard much? (Lets hope this MD doesn't have a wife....THEN that could be cam worthy...and probably could be on the youtube or something...)And please don't tell me that he used the hospital computer to pull up his account and ya'll hung out and read it.....
To the OP....In everything we do and decisions we make can come back to bite us, or slip away into the depths never to be spoken of again. Tax forms would not, I would think, have "camgirl sex room" and occupation as "sex worker" on them. Could be wrong, however....
But as the quoted example can point out is that the LAST thing you would want is your coworkers bringing up a session you have done (even years later) at the nurses station.
Private life private, work like work.

Well in all seriousness for the OP, since you never posted any content, there is no chance it is going to affect your nursing career. You didn't make any profit so whatever sites you made accounts on are not going to send you 1099s. In fact, most sexworkers end up opening LLCs because even though cam sites and stripclubs are technically supposed to furnish their independent contractors with 1099s, they rarely do.
And as a side note, if you do find a co - worker is a sexworker, keep your mouth shut. It's none of your business. If you have no understanding of the realm of sexwork than you have zero business talking about it. You are potentially setting your co-worker up to be harassed, raped, or murdered. It is really serious so I know people think this thread is so funny but sexworkers carry a huge stigma and the US has the highest rate of sexworker murders in the world.
