Nursing and the sex industry

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

So I'm feeling a little uneasy at the moment. I had started my CNA course and when I was about to finish I had an accident. This accident left it so that I could not work or go to school. In that time I had heard about "camming". Without putting much thought into it I signed up to a few camming sites. I figured that I could sign up for a few camming sites and if I decided that's what I was going to do then I would already have a few accounts set up. What didn't cross my mind at the time was 1099's and background checks. I never actually broadcasted myself so I never received a penny. I've read that companies aren't required to send a 1099 unless you exceed $599 but some companies send them regardless. My question is how badly do you think just signing up for these sites would effect my future in nursing? I'm hoping that I can call these sites and see if they will not send out 1099's to the IRS.

Thank you

Silly me. Based on the title, I thought this might have been the beginning of a discussion on the health needs of sex workers. :sarcastic:

I thought it was about the sexual needs of healthcare workers. Sorely disappointed.

That is an entirely different fetish cam site in which guys watch morbidly obese women stuff their faces.

And you know this...how?

I must say, this camming thread is way more interesting than the last one...

Guessing all we'll get from OP is the sounds of silence. But carry on...this is way more fun than the other camming thread!

You guys ever see Diary of a London Call Girl? (I think that's what it's called.) It was supposed to be based on an actual high end call girl and was rather detailed in how her career choice affected her personal life. The last season had an ending that was so sad, and then it just never came back. Turns out she made it all up, but still a good show, nonetheless.

Before last week I had never heard of camming and now two within a week ....Hmm

You have totally redeemed yourself from that comment about my Seahawks sticker!

I honestly dont think that having worked in the sex industry would have any effect on having a nursing career. They do a background check and the cam websites show up under names that dont give it away. If it even were to come up during an interview just say you worked in the entertainment industry for extra income which wouldn't be a lie. HR typically is only concerned with work experience that is relevant to health care. If you worked retail or fast food X amount of years ago but have recent CNA experience, they will ask you about the CNA position. A lot of girls are strippers during college. Is it really an issue this day and age? People have less money/jobs than they did in the past few decades and have to resort to desperate measures to make ends meet. At least its legal.

If you were thinking about teaching that would be a whole different story.

I'll offer a brief, genuine response, although I think maybe this is the same poster as the other thread. Maybe not. But anyway....

I briefly dated a woman probably 16 years ago who was filmed performing on a sybian. She was paid $400. This was in 2000, I believe. We live in a small(ish) area and the site she worked for was a locally run site. To this day, she is known as the local Media star.

I think that all of the sex industry should be legalized and regulated. But those who work it also need to keep in mind there are consequences. If it's your life and your passion, then you go ahead and rock it. But if you have goals outside camming or Media, this will follow you. If you don't mind that, then go for it. Accept the consequences when there are some.

Is it really an issue this day and age?

Going by the responses to the thread, I'd have to say yeah, it still is. Sad but true.

OP, would you even have had to file taxes on the income from self-employment? They may have to send out a 1099 for it, but it doesn't mean you have to claim it. Last time I had to deal with self employment, the threshold was $400 -- if you earned more than $400, you had to claim it. If not, government didn't care and it wasn't required.

As far as any kind of official background check would go, it seems unlikely they'd ever find out. Like another poster said, if you ever do get asked about it, say it's entertainment/acting. I don't even put non-nursing jobs on my resume, and I doubt I'd ever be asked about them. My experience working fast food and retail isn't of much relevance to nursing. I'd focus more on getting yourself some relevant health care experience and not worry so much about this.

Bwahahaha!

Reeeeaaaaallllyyy. Are you friends with the other cam girl?

I'll bite.

I just watched this stupid Dr. Phil where these girls were sugar babies for rich men. Maybe you should do that instead. Your cam girl experience will come in handy and you will make more money. The website they used was something like MakingArrangements, or maybe ArrangementMaker, I can't remember.

It's Seeking Arrangements. A neurosurgeon I used to work with often had very attractive younger "girlfriends". They would bring him lunch often. He was about 50 and his girlfriends appeared to be 20-30 and there seemed to be a different one about every 6 months. One late night in the ICU some of us guys where asking him about it. Without the slightest embarrassment he showed us his account. Just for fun we did a search of the women using the terms "nurse", "nursing" and "RN" using his account.

It appears to me that about every second woman offering herself on that site is either a nurse, a nursing student, or a want-to-be nursing student.

There were at LEAST two strippers in my nursing school class. I don't think anyone should be surprised at all that nurses or want-to-be nurses are working in various aspects of the sex / Media industry.
