I enjoyed NY Med ABC TV limited series about life in NY Presbyterian-Weil Cornell Med Center last year so tuned into premier tonight. Shows patient dramas involved young man with dissecting aneurysim who's father died at age 21 same illness, young man with multiple GSW--8 exit wounds, male neurosurgical patient with cervical spinal cord tumor and young lwomen brought in by ambulance due to "Sunburn on legs, unable to stand up" due to second degree burns with nerf football size blisters needing debridement in burn unit. Medical personnel stories involved 28yo female urology resident and 6 yr veteran ER RN--who gets FIRED over social media post + escorted out the door.

TV Guide Magazine: In the first episode, a New York Presbyterian nurse is fired because she posted a picture of the ER on Twitter. That seemed surprising because personnel issues can get tricky. Did you need to do a lot of legal vetting to get that on the air?

Wrong: Remember ABC News is doing this series, so we operate under its standards and practices. We do not allow the hospital to see our edited footage before it airs and we don't seek their approval. As a fair play issue, was her firing fair or merited? She posted photos from inside her work place, an environment where patients assume there is medical confidentiality. There are strict codes and regulations. She admitted she was wrong to do it and they fired her for it. That sent a message to staff. If [the hospital] had a vote, would they have wanted that story in the series? I don't know. It's possible they wouldn't have.

it's a good guess that the "NY Med" team was as shocked as Duke when she was called upstairs and informed that, after 6½ years, she had just worked her last shift at New York Presbyterian. Viewers would be shocked, too, if teases for the new season didn't give that development away.

For details about what went wrong for Duke, you'll need to watch the Season 2 premiere of the eight-part series at 9 p.m. Thursday on ABC.

Suffice to say, learning she was being let go "was traumatic. That place was my family," she says.

Don't worry about Duke, though. Not only has she landed another job, she has many more irons in the fire, including a website (officialkatieduke.com), a new YouTube show, an endorsement deal for Dickies and Cherokee scrubs, speaking engagements and a line of "Deal With It" merchandise. She'll even return in later episodes of "NY Med."

I don't think she should have been fired. How did they find out it was her?

It's not a HIPAA violation although that means absolutely nothing. It's in extremely poor taste considering it is easily linked to a particular person (even though it likely doesn't share any specific medical information about that person). I don't think it's unreasonable for a hospital to want people to feel like if they are the victim of massive trauma that the staff won't post pictures of the aftermath to instagram.

I agree, HIPAA rules are irrelevant. It has nothing to do with HIPAA violations, it has to do with the fact that it makes their employees, therefore their facility, look really bad. Although, I have to question the bit of double standard for a hospital that permits them to film a reality TV series there to suddenly get sanctimonious about an Instagram photo.

She shared the gender of a patient and how he was injured. Being hit by a train is pretty specific. It's still patient information.

I see nothing in the picture itself that would be a reason to fire her. However, if they had a social media policy and she violated it then she just handed them a reason to get rid of a nurse that was not "towing the line". Too bad really.

I am sure that the family of that trauma patient would be horrified and devastated if they saw that photo with the tasteless man v. 6 train caption.

It wasn't just insensitive, it was cruel.

I wonder what the predominate age of the Katie Duke followers are. I've been doing this for over 30 years and my whole response to NY Med was "MEH". I don't get it. I was working at Hopkins when they filmed Hopkins 24/7 and having witnessed filming and them what actually made the TV, well let me tell you, in some cases it might as well have been scripted.

I have also had to chuckle at the number or people who posted on twitter about NY Med shouldn't have fired her and should bring her back. They hadn't processed the difference from the hospital that actually employed her and the ABC News produced show.

I've had issues with the persona of Katie Duke. It's hard to take someone seriously as a role model when they publicly break rules, flaunt their disregard for policies publicly. We all break rules, but flaunting it and posting publicly that your breaking them isn't the smartest thing on the face of the earth.

I agree with those that have stated previously that this was probably the last straw. I'm surprised they didn't take further action based on the possible HIPAA issues with that post. Although it didn't post a picture of a person or give a name, the Man vs 6 Train gave out a lot of information. A quick search showed a daily small list of people it could have been. As to the Doc not being censured. Well I'm sure the Doc doesn't have as many followers as Katie Duke does.

At best, she was being SUPREMELY insensitive. I work in a pressure cooker environment myself and know it can be easy to become flippant if you don't watch yourself...but to put it out there where the family could see? I get wanting the public to know what nurses actually do, contrary to many people's perceptions, and contrary to TV's dramatic and comedic portrayals...but to put it out there in much of its gory detail for the family to see?

At worst, she violated HIPAA. I mean how many men got hit by the #6 train that day? I know NYC is big, but I doubt there were other men who got hit by the #6 train. Pretty obvious whose bay this was.

I hate for her that it was such a hard-learned lesson (and hopefully she DID learn her lesson), but her firing was preventable. A little common sense, lady!

Not weighing in on the Katie Duke firing, but I was really concerned about that aortic dissection. I was very glad to see the patient healthy at ten months out. And holy hockey sticks, that sunburn! The urology resident was a hoot. A good premiere for this season.

I'm watching that episode now-the sunburn looked so painful.
