Nurses Disabilities

I just got my first Social Security check Friday after waiting only the minimum time. To say that this is a blessing would be the understatement of the year; my DH and I were within $200 of being flat broke when this miracle arrived. It's not an enormous amount per month but it's more than I was expecting, and that was assuming I'd get it in the first place.....something I was very uncertain of.

This also is vindication for all those nights of poor sleep, wondering if I was doing the right thing and being hard on myself for "giving up". Between my bipolar disorder and my physical issues, I've been a hot mess, and I'm glad I listened to those who told me I should apply.

I thank all of you who have been so supportive during this process. It made a difference in the way I feel about being disabled and made me realize that I'm not sponging off the taxpayers. After all, I paid into the system for 35 years, and I'm thankful that it's there for me now that I need it.

Congratulations on your good fortune!

Congrats!!!

I remember when I got my first Social Security check-it was literally a Christmas Miracle; I got it on Christmas Eve and it helped me heat my home and get caught up.

Sometimes the little blessings do come through!! :D

I'm glad they approved your disability quickly! Hope your health improves, at least this will give you some peace of mind not having to worry so much about money. Good luck to you!

Yes, it really took a lot of pressure off my back. Now I'm at least contributing to the family funds---I have felt TERRIBLE for not bringing any money in all these months. And there's no more pressure to look fruitlessly for jobs that aren't there for those of us who are over 50 and not as healthy as we ought to be. It is an ENORMOUS relief to be out from underneath all that.

Enjoy that load falling off your back. Celebrate a little or a lot. As one who's followed you a long time, I'm happy you're finally getting a well deserved break.

I'm clinking my Diet Coke can to the screen. Cheers!

That is great!! I'm so glad you got approved. My process took 3 years. And when I got that first check, I finally felt like I was starting to get my independence as a person back, just because I was finally getting my own money. So I know how you feel. Good Luck and I hope not having the stress of not having enough money and the stress of being ill will help you start to get better. That's what happened to me. When I didn't have the stress of working anymore, my seizures started to get better. I was working crazy hours in retail and my meds make me so tired, I fell asleep at my desk when I had a desk job.

It took me a few years but I finally got my epilepsy under control. My fibro flares up rarely and I am finally able to go back to school. Don't ever feel like you are sponging. This is what disability was designed for. For people who honestly cannot work. And after reading a lot of your posts, you honestly cannot work and there is nothing to be ashamed of with that. I'm so glad this worked out for you.

I am very glad for you!!! You can relax a bit now and enjoy life.
