I just got my first Social Security check Friday after waiting only the minimum time. To say that this is a blessing would be the understatement of the year; my DH and I were within $200 of being flat broke when this miracle arrived. It's not an enormous amount per month but it's more than I was expecting, and that was assuming I'd get it in the first place.....something I was very uncertain of.
This also is vindication for all those nights of poor sleep, wondering if I was doing the right thing and being hard on myself for "giving up". Between my bipolar disorder and my physical issues, I've been a hot mess, and I'm glad I listened to those who told me I should apply.
I thank all of you who have been so supportive during this process. It made a difference in the way I feel about being disabled and made me realize that I'm not sponging off the taxpayers. After all, I paid into the system for 35 years, and I'm thankful that it's there for me now that I need it.
