This time last year, we were all commiserating on a forum about pitiful nurses week gifts (or not getting a gift at all).
At my new job, I think I've hit the mother load. It's like hospital-branded Christmas.
Hospital-wide gift is a blanket with a logo-emblazoned *portable folding lawn chair*. They're sending it to our houses. Unit-based gift (which I've never even received before!) was a personally-monogrammed jacket (yay!) with the unit logo, erasable pens, a Starbucks gift card (!) and a candy bar.
I think they're trying to distract us from the fact that they pay $3-$7 less per hour than the competitor hospitals in the area. Still, it's very much appreciated.

Unfortunately according to the IRS, gift cards and cash from an employer are taxable.

Department heads had to create a gift basket for each of their units, and then they're raffled off at a big celebration. The ones I made are Moscow Mule themed. With Tito's, because everything else is ***.

I think unit-themed gifts are lovely and promote team building! Are you listening, management?

We have to DONATE money and work in teams to create themed baskets that 5 "lucky" people will be randomly selected to win.
Just what we needed...giving some of our paycheck back to the company, extra company-related projects to do in our time off, and 5 people being chosen to stand out while the rest of us get nothing. That'll be great for our already-suffering teamwork and low morale. We're gonna feel so appreciated.
A lot of us are annoyed about it, but we're being pressured into donating. They've pre-arranged the amount we're supposed to donate and created the teams. I haven't donated yet...still wrapping my head around it. Maybe if we band together we can stage a revolt.

The hospital I used to work at would give out gift cards at Christmas and then ask for them back, for "charity". So now what I want to know is, if I gave it back would I still be liable for the tax, and would they now also be liable for tax?

How about just not donate? And tell your coworkers you aren't going to participate and management can do what they want to about it. I'm betting your coworkers start keeping their wallets closed, as well.

Yeah, at least it's not going to cost you anything and you don't have to pay income tax on it. So you see? Management was thinking of you all along!

My company had a luncheon to celebrate ALL employees, at one of the corporate offices where none of the nurses work.
