Nurses smoking weed?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey nurses,

In honor of "420" tomorrow... As a health-care professional, what are your thoughts on smoking weed? Any nurses out there that smoke a joint here and there?

Cheers.

While it may be legal in several states, businesses have the right to declare their property "drug free". If you are called on to submit to a random drug test, (check your contract. Many businesses are now including random testing in the fine print), even the hint of THC will be grounds for dismissal. And heavens, appearing in front of State Board is terrifying.

No thanks

Medical marijuana has no THC and thus no high. Relieves pain without any impairment. Better than narcotics! Safer to work under. Should not be a problem as long as you have prescription and your state approved medical marijuana use. Comes in a capsule or liquid for under tongue. Works very well. No side effects of sleepiness, nausea, hungry, dizzy or anything. Can fully function when taking it.

very much a problem if your facility doesn't permit it. federal employees cannot use it no matter what the reason and private facilities have the right to say No Thanks as well to any applicant or employee who uses it. just having a prescription doesn't mean it's got to be accepted by every employer.

Well, it is legal in California now. It never much floated my boat however I don't appreciate that taking a few tokes after work would be substantially different than tossing back a few beer.

Excepting it remains illegal under Federal law, I work in corrections and asked a police officer if this would be legal for him; he said no. I doubt nurses' could test positive for it, either. Add to that California is an 'at will' employment state wherein an employers can fire someone for a bad hair day.

Now people who smoke daily tend to get forgetful thus not sure how comfortable I'd feel in their care...

Personally I can do without the 4x tar over cigarettes (only partly true Does Marijuana Contain More Tar Than Cigarettes?)

But, seriously if you need it medically, all in for the Marisol. But that would be srip, and legal, amiright!?

But people who drink themselves into a stupor and come to work hungover is okay because alcohol is legal, right?!?

So risky .... I'm no " saint" and don't smoke anything, of any kind it grosses me out... but smoking pot while being an RN is incredibly foolish ... because the length of time it is detectable is soooo completely unreliable... 21 days? 37? 48?? anything could happen... you could fall on your ass in a huge puddle housekeeping left negligently on the floor , and in most facilities, you'd have to provide a urine sample!!... whammo, + for THC, and it could have been a week or 3 weeks ago!!!

too, too risky....

Sorry-

I haven't read all of this thread, but most of it. Who said working hungover was OK?

grapes help just as much...and yes pulling smoke into your lungs is less dangerous than being under the effects of ethyl alcohol, regardless of how socially common it may be.

How many people have died from marijuana and how many have died from alcohol?

It baffles me that you would even think that, you must either live in the middle of nowhere or not keep up with scientific journals...juat because you're an ADN doesn't mean you don't have be ability to stay updated

Remember it is still illegal at the federal level and any facility that gets Medicare/Medicaid is subject to compliance with federal laws. At least that is what I was told. Just food for thought.

-_- the legal aspect is pretty trite and hackneyed by now as it has been referenced just about a million times.

What's been overlooked though is that OG was from Canada, where random drug tests are far less common and it's not nearly as scrutinized as it is here, both socially and legally.

I have never used pot and never will, So I am going on what professors have told me, that's all my post referencing it was saying.
