Nurses smoking weed?

Published

Hey nurses,

In honor of "420" tomorrow... As a health-care professional, what are your thoughts on smoking weed? Any nurses out there that smoke a joint here and there?

Cheers.

I know many of you are saying weed is not psychologically addicting etc ....and I'm not saying it is or it isn't. But smoking too much is just ridiculous. I like to drink but do I drink every single day? No. Do I know of some people that can't call it a day without smoking weed, everyday? Yeah ....and that's ridiculous. I have and have HAD friends who smoke it and are very productive in life, and I've had a good friend back in the day who, once she started smoking weed, she worshipped it. It became her life. All of her activities and priorities revolved around it. Nothing was more important. So much so that she ended up marrying a drug dealer and traveling the country ...traveling is cool but let's say the money she had to do it with was coming from a sketch place ....as far as I know she is still consumed by the idea of weed. Her whole personality changed ....it's sad. So yeah, weed can be addicting or fill a void I think. But anything can, good or bad ...the goal is to get addicted to something positive! But yeah most of my current friends do smoke it recreational or once in a while and I'm OK by it...I just personally don't plus would be scared of getting drug tested and they respect it. My bf doesn't either and even though I have friends who do I just prefer to date someone who doesn't ....we can unwind with some drinks but it'd just be weird for me to have a bf who smoked weed around me ....idk...that's just me...personal preference ....plus I'd be afraid of being exposed to it since we live together.

I don't have a problem with it, I do believe that it is safer than alcohol and also ciggs. Even if it was 100% legal in my state, It's still 100% illegal federally. I tried it in college....not for me, but then again, nor is alcohol or ciggs. I do have a feeling that within the next 10 years or so, it will become legal in all 50 states if not close. I would view it as the same as alcohol use; are you going to have a few shots before going into work? or have a shot at work to "relax?" Personally I would not do it regardless of legality, but I would caution any of you out there that do, like it's been mentioned, is it worth your career?

Smoking is nasty!

Do what u want in moderation just DO NOT do it when u r caring for your patients. What u do off the clock is your thing.

This thread made me lol'd hard, that said i chiefed every weekend in pre-nursing, and a couple times in college. Now that i actually have a license that i love so much i'll pass on the reefer.

I agree, and to your comment I add, we all ready have ETOH, so do we really need another recreational drug to dull our minds and cause more accidents on the roads and highways?

I am in full agreement with marijuana being a controlled substance and used medically, it should not be used as a recreational "fun drug."

That's actually terrible advice for any nurse who is subject to random drug screens.

Stay OFF the drugs! In MHO, weed just numbs the brain but it does not take the pain away for ever.

It's going to be legal in 5 years. I can wait.

Just because it's legal doesn't mean your employer or the BON has to allow it. Just look at all the facilities that nicotine test and refuse to hire cigarette smokers.

I wouldn't work for a facility that impinged on my legal lifestyle choices.

Until the Feds make it legal, it isn't legal regardless of what any state says. And given that you administer meds under federal authority, I wouldn't presume to start sparking up unless your employer is OK with it.
