Off the record, do you see yourself working as a nurse in the same unit or the same type of unit at a different hospital or in a different location? Do you hope to move on to a different setting within nursing? Attain an advanced degree? Stay at home for a while? Change careers, go to medical/law school, etc.?
I run into so many nurses who are pursuing their BSNs, MSNs and other, non-nursing related degrees on the side. Oddly enough, I'm working on advanced flight training on my days off. My goal is to work in the aviation industry full-time within the next two years and to continue in nursing on an occasional/PRN basis as a safety net.
After 20 years in home health I am moving on. The way things are going in home health I doubt much of it will still be here in 5 years. I really did not want to get into school nursing as a permanent thing but there is more security there, so probably a school nurse in 5 and 10 years.
If by some miracle things change for hospitals I hope to be a director of a hospital-based home health agency in 5 years or at least in 10. I spent a lot of time in school to get a Master's degree and would love to use it as I reach the latter years of my career.
Since I start my RN-BSN in January I pray to be finished with my BSN and NP in 5 years. Hopefully working in an ER somewhere and doing traveling nursing. In 10 years maybe have my own clinic as an NP hopefully a family clinic. Only god really knows where I will be and he hasn't failed me so far.
In ten years I would like to be working in a clam shack, down by the ocean, breathing in fresh, salty air while wiping down tables and fighting off seagulls. I am hoping there will not be a hospital anywhere in sight.
Definetly!! I hope in that time frame, my dh who is a nsg sup, and I will be retired and residing between Cozumel and South Padre Island, Texas. Those are our 2 favorite vacation places, we love the beach!!
