Off the record, do you see yourself working as a nurse in the same unit or the same type of unit at a different hospital or in a different location? Do you hope to move on to a different setting within nursing? Attain an advanced degree? Stay at home for a while? Change careers, go to medical/law school, etc.?
I run into so many nurses who are pursuing their BSNs, MSNs and other, non-nursing related degrees on the side. Oddly enough, I'm working on advanced flight training on my days off. My goal is to work in the aviation industry full-time within the next two years and to continue in nursing on an occasional/PRN basis as a safety net.
This is fun!! My goals are to pay off my loan (BSN) and then get an advanced degree. I like the idea of a non-hosptal based job and would love to work for a healthcare collaborative focused on preventative medicine with a holistic/complementary medicine approach. Kinda like that Grey's Anatomy spin-off!
And the idea of being someplace warm is very appealing!
in 5 yrs. I hope to be lying on a beach in the Keys sipping Margueritas....
that is my plan, my son will be through college and I will have my 30 yrs. in...
and I have already had my full....I wish it was in one yr., not 5 !!!! the fun has long worn off my working...I am ready to retire !!!
Very interesting.
If you look at the posts, the majority of us are either just getting in, or just getting out. Nursing will change a lot in 5 years, I reckon.
I, too, will be in my 5th year of nursing in 5 years. I plan on retiring from it in 10, and letting my wife support me with her vet medicine practice!! (I can help her manage her practice, maybe go to school to be a vet tech or related)
This is my 3rd career.

I plan to complete my MBA, I stopped while going to nursing school. After that, I plan to pursue an advanced nursing degree, I am thinking MSN with a concentration as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. I plan to return to medical devices and work PT/PRN as a nurse. The sales and business experience, combined with nursing will help me ensure that quality and cost effective products are in the hospitals and surgical suites and that the nurses have a voice.
