Nurses, where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?

Published

Off the record, do you see yourself working as a nurse in the same unit or the same type of unit at a different hospital or in a different location? Do you hope to move on to a different setting within nursing? Attain an advanced degree? Stay at home for a while? Change careers, go to medical/law school, etc.?

I run into so many nurses who are pursuing their BSNs, MSNs and other, non-nursing related degrees on the side. Oddly enough, I'm working on advanced flight training on my days off. My goal is to work in the aviation industry full-time within the next two years and to continue in nursing on an occasional/PRN basis as a safety net.

In ten years I would like to be working in a clam shack, down by the ocean, breathing in fresh, salty air while wiping down tables and fighting off seagulls. I am hoping there will not be a hospital anywhere in sight.

Oh my...you sure picked a time to join the aviation industry...hahaha

I've been flying 22 years and I'm also a nurse. Pilots at my company are on reserve for approximately 19 years. It's good to have nursing as a back-up but flying is definitely my first love. Good luck on your ratings

Hey, thanks FAtoCRNA! My thinking is where there's a will, there's a way! Happy flying (and nursing)!!

Specializes in med-surg.

I am a new nurse and in 5 years I see myself having my masters' degree in nursing administration. I want to be the DON of a nursing home. In 10 years I hope to have an administrative position at a nursing school.

Rocking chair is my destination.

I am also a new nurse (3 weeks into my job!). I'm doing in-home pediatric nursing right now. I do love it, but within 5 years I hope to get some pediatric hospital experience,as well as OR experience, which will mean a relocation somewhere. In 10 years, I hope to have gone on a stint with Mercy Ships. They do medical missions to 3rd world countries.......... that's really where my heart is!

I'm a nursing student(graduating in May,2009) and I see myself with a Master degree in Nursing, and being quiet an expert in med-surg or OB/Gyn,surgery or post op.

these are very similiar to my hopes as well.

in 10 yrs, i'd like to be living in a yr-round shack in coastal maine...

surrounded by salt water, tons of trees and green and wild flowers, and my dogs.

meanwhile, hubby is dreaming of florida.

s/b interesting to see where this goes.

and it's funny you mentioned a clamshack.

we have always wanted to open a diner w/the best homemade, comfort food around.

lovehospital, this has been debated ad nauseum on this forum. :D I've heard from all sides about what is best for new nurses ~ some say a year of Med-Surg, some say it's ok to go right into a specialty. Honestly, I needed a job, and in my area, hospital jobs are not easy to come by. I knew I didn't want to do LTC. So, I applied at an agency that was willing to give new grads good orientation. So far I feel comfortable. When I do get a chance to work in a hospital (hence the relocation), I'll just have to be careful to go with one which has an ample orientation. I'm not afraid to learn and "start over" if need be. For now, this fits my schedule and personality.

As it turns out, I am not an adrenaline junkie and really did not enjoy preceptoring on the Med-Surg floor in school anyway..... certainly not enough to give a year to it. I love being able to give time and great care to my client.

Best of luck in your schooling and future plans!
