Off the record, do you see yourself working as a nurse in the same unit or the same type of unit at a different hospital or in a different location? Do you hope to move on to a different setting within nursing? Attain an advanced degree? Stay at home for a while? Change careers, go to medical/law school, etc.?
I run into so many nurses who are pursuing their BSNs, MSNs and other, non-nursing related degrees on the side. Oddly enough, I'm working on advanced flight training on my days off. My goal is to work in the aviation industry full-time within the next two years and to continue in nursing on an occasional/PRN basis as a safety net.
I see myself primarily infused to Ambulatory Care, as long as they let me. While I can appreciate the value of inpatient/floor nursing, it is too hard on the body to me and not as safe for nurses as I would like. Too many patients, too many orders changing at the drop of a hat, and too much strife between nurses.
An announcement was made that my facility may reduce some of the services offered by Ambulatory Care because our department already makes less money from insurance companies and Medicaid, so, if this does happen, as long as I have a job, I guess I will just deal.
Fun!!
5 years- done with my BSN. Working in Cardiac ICU. Working on my DNP or MSN.
10 years- done with my DNP/MSN. Not sure where I'll work.
Eventually: I would like to be a lead instructor for a nursing program. Also, I'm interested in being a nursing legal consultant. So, maybe I'll be doing that on the side. I love nursing!! So many choices and opportunities, but not without hard work!!
my 5 year goal is to stay in cardiac nursing, probably in a Cardiac ICU or cath lab while working on my BSN and NP and on a personal level marry my loving BF and have a kid.
my 10 year goal is to be an Adult Nurse Practitioner working with underserved populations and educating in the underserved communities. All while juggling a husband, home, 3 kids and a dog. (Yes I wanna be SuperWoman!)
In five years I'll probably still be an ICU nurse, but I would consider moving to a PICU. The ED sounds like it might be interesting too. Public health nursing holds some appeal for me, but I wouldn't want to pursue that until near the end of my career because I'd be too afraid of losing all of my bedside skills. Twenty years from now I'm pretty sure I'll be ready to work at the clam shack.
Hey, I'm a nursing student class of 09, in the next 5 yrs I plan to have my Master be a Adult Nurse Practitioner and also work in public health. I also want to have a house build and have another child. Most important of them all enjoy my wife and children.:heartbeat
In the next 10 yrs have a good relationship with the community and be planning for my retirement.:clpty:
