Nurses secretive about getting another job

Published

We have a Per Diem nurse 'Karen' who also is Per Diem at another hospital where I used to work. There's others from there and a lot of back and forth. Another coworker who also works both places let it slip to me that she thought Karen was now orienting at a 3rd nearby hospital. There's some of our nurses who work there as well, lots of openness, no restrictions from management at all.

So I sent a friendly text to Karen asking how she's doing, that I hadn't seen her in awhile. She said she's been really busy with her daughter's graduation. Mind you, she and I have been workplace friends. I later confirmed with a nurse that went to that 3rd hospital fulltime, staying Per Diem with us, that Karen has been there a lot orienting.

So, Karen is being secretive, which is ridiculous since nursing is a small world where it's going to all come out in the open anyways. No one would ever bat an eye about her picking up another job since there've been fewer of the day shifts that Karen likes available lately.

So, why would someone be secretive about this?

I really don't understand why you care. It's her life, her business. If she wanted you to know, she'd tell you. I have great relationships with the people I work with now and still stay in touch with people I have worked with in the past. Most of them don't know I have a PRN job and a part-time job on top of my full-time one. It's not because I don't want them to know, or that I'm even remotely worried about how it'll be perceived. I just haven't taken the time to explain it to them and don't care enough to announce it.

Don't read into her reply so much. Live your own life, and mind your own business. Your life will be much longer, happier and healthier for it.

Wait, why is this even a topic? And with so many replies! (including mine). This is when I wish there was a moderator.

There are so many much more worthy topics with so many fewer replies.

She's secretive because of people like you who fell the need to write to this forum about it.

I don't think most of these people "get" you, emergent. They should be permanently banned from this site, this planet, and perhaps even this universe.

This thread is funny!

I personally wouldn't say whether or not I had 2, 3 or 4 jobs unless I felt like it and even then I would be selective in who I told. People are funny and you have to be careful in general how much business you put out there.

Karen obviously didn't want her business "put out there" for whatever her reasons are but now look where her business is.

If i was a nurse, i dont need to tell my coworker that i have another job regardless... did this once at my work before and it got pass onto another coworker who likes to create a tail of unfounded story. So nope... i suggest you not confront her about it. For one, she didnt tel you for a reason. 2, it's not your business to digged into her personal work of choice. Hugged n kisses

I think it's been made abundantly clear that the OP crossed a line by posting about a co-worker's "secretiveness" regarding something that is none of her business. Can we please stop beating this dead horse and move on?

The thread is still active so more people will keep posting their opinions and in a way their opinions were asked for. It's like saying what do you think?, o wait, don't tell me.

I agree. I think the OP has been sufficiently flogged. I don't believe there is anything more that needs said. Perhaps it's time to shut this down.

Did you directly ask Karen if she had this additional job and she lied? Otherwise, she’s not being secretive, you guys just must not be as friendly as you think.

ETA: I’ve been on vaca the last week and see I’m late to the party. Oops.
