Nurses pay compare to Female

Published

is it ture that a male nurse will get paid a bit more than a female nurse and they are both on the same level, same exp, and same school, etc

Titles suppose to be "Male Nurses pay compare to Female Nurse pay".

Specializes in burn ICU, SICU, ER, Trauma Rapid Response.

Generally yes. I read a few years ago in AJn that on average make RNs make 9% more than female RNs. In my hospital most of the highest paid nurses are men. I don't know about everyplace but where I work the med are mostly in medical transport, SICU, MICU and ER. Among those who work strait night shift men are way over represented. The weekend crew are mostly guys. These are all higher paying positions.

Absolutely not - same position/experience etc. same pay.

The idea that a male gets paid more than a female in ANY industry is just STUPID.

Think about it.. What is the purpose of any organization? To provide a service or product at the lowest possible cost.

If a company could hire a person to do the EXACT SAME JOB and pay them less...In this example a female... how could ANY MALE find a job? If we ACTUALLY DID COST MORE we would all be unemployed. Period.

It is an urban legend started by a study done in 1964 that has since been debunked.

The AJN is not exactly a scholarly publication..

What hospital would not jump at the chance to save 9% on the salaries of men?

You know, I truly do not know.

When I applied, I gave the base salary I would work for. It was exceeded. Regular raises are given.

I'm happy with just knowing that.

all i know is whenever a big fat body needs to be pulled up or has fallen to the floor i along with another male nurse get called, anytime a disruptive pt or visitor is raising hell i or another male nurse get called...you see the pattern here. so during the last evaluations i made my manager very aware of this and i was $$ compensated for all the extra hassle and labor. if you are a male nurse and find yourself being the designated hospital lift guy or hospital swat-team ask for increased money compensation.

I really don't think there is much if any difference in pay, in the same posting about a 9% pay difference, there is talk about men working night shifts and weekends..those generally automatically include shift differential for anyone working them.

I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that when you get called to help with these situations you are not the only person in the room handling it or doing the lifting, and I'd also bet that some of the other staff helping are women.

Besides, I don't whine about doing all of the female foleys, bedpans, peri-care, etc., plus male foleys when they don't want other guys to do it.

Finally, I work in a union hospital so this is never an issue.

No. The only reason for the statistical difference is because, generally, there are higher percentages of male nurses in areas where the salaries are generally higher (ICU, CRNA, etc.)

At the hospital I work at, they start all nurses out at the same rate (based on experience and certification only).

Knowing the pay rate of fellow employees, yes, the men make more. Sometimes as much as $4/hr more for a nurse with NO experience. Our pay scale is clearly spelled out, but management still seems to go above for men. Is it a management problem? DEFINATELY. The person responsible is gone, but the pay differences remain.

So, The solution is clear... go to your upper manager and tell them you know a way to save your institution a lot of money... fire all the males.... Do you really think any business person would not JUMP at the chance to save money?

Another alternative is to file suit... Wal Mart is about to be hosed on a suit over unequal pay.

Personally would never even consider working for an organization who would take such a bold injustice than to pay differently for equal work based on sex....PERIOD!!!
