Nurses in Other Professions

Published

Hi!

I'm wondering how many of you know nurses that have taken on other careers rather than to continue with their nursing and why?

I'm too new to the profession to know any personally but a lady I worked with said she knew 5 former nurses who were working at the local Wal-Mart because it was less stressful and nursing was not about the money.

I am sure there are others...Care to share?

People leaving after investing all the "blood, sweat and tears" should really give you a HUGE MESSAGE!

Reality in nsg school is much like expecting the truth from a politician during election year! :p

Ditto!!!

I am hanging in by a very thin thread. ONly because I am working only weekends now. I have actually been working a lot of OT, the equivalent of FT, w/o bennies of course. They are hapy to have me, but God forbid I take a day off w pay!

I am now a licensed nail tech. I am not actively working in that field right now, but I will keep renewing it, and if I don't get one of the most recent jobs I interviewed for, I will apply to work in a salon, and keep my w/e super job until I am sure I can survive on just the nail tech job, which I have been assured I can, but I am a doubting thomas and have to see this for myself. NO HOLIDAYS!!!!!

In Las Vegas, bartenders, cocktail servers and card dealers can make as much or more than a nurse. This is ok as long as you don't mind graveyard, on-call shifts, no job security and being treated like a child by management.

Well, I know some unit managers that treat the nurses like children.

It is anything but clear whether you are referring to nursing or to Vegas employees when you write "as long as you don't mind...."

At least Vegas casino employees do not have the concerns of:

their customers lives being in their hands,

nor of being sued for malpractice for misdealing a card,

nor of being forced to deal at three different blackjack tables all at once when the casino is short-handed,

nor of continually being interrupted to answer the telephone or transport a customer to his hotel room when this means not taking care of the bar or whatever area the employee is responsible for

nor of dealing with highly infectious items.

On the other hand, Vegas employees don't have the privilege of wearing scrubs, either, so I guess it all evens out.

excellent post, sjoe. bravo.

as usual, succinct and to the point.

I have all the respect to those of you still in nursing. However, for those of you that are unhappy, why are you still practicing nursing?

Paleobug...I can't tell you how many times I've seen friends dropped with out notice and have a h#%% if a time getting a new job. PPL come here thinking it's the best place to work and that their going to make so much money. It's a sad reality, but I guess for some the grass is always greener.

IMHO, I see no problem with having as many careers in life, keep yourself happy and if that means moving on then do so, you can always go back.

I think many here who are unhappy have already stated the things that they're trying to do to get out of nursing AND have an income they can survive on at the same time. It's not practical to just quit nursing and end up homeless because you have no other job to go to.

If this is what nursing is like, I don't want any part of it.

Well, you all are scaring me...and I guess I should be scared a bit, huh? I am yet another nursing student making comment here.

I am still determined to do this...I am hoping great strides are made to get these hideous working conditions rectified in the nursing profession.

Well, if any one cares, I love my job. I work 2 12's and 1 8hour shift a week. I do L&D at a hospital that does about 200 births a month. I love it. Just the right pace. I work nights and feel like a SAHM. A little tired and I do hate the holidays, but I enjoy what I do. I'd never consider Walmart (it paid for nursing school). Retail is VERY stressful. People are always in crappy moods when they are shopping and they want you to drop everything to help them NOW!

Just thought I'd share.

Whew! Good, okay, something positive! I want to do L&D after graduation. Been my dream for some time.

Thank you for your post...I care... it means a lot to me to hear that there ARE nurses out there that still find it all "worth it." :D

I forgot to post that my cousin was an RN for just 6 months. She could not take it anymore and had been working at a local hospital. A lot of job stress and coming home crying kind of stuff. She was lucky that she was married and had a nice husband who paid the bills, so she went back to University and got a degree in Elementry Education. She now works as a teacher, and has been doing that ever since nursing school. About 6 years now and has her summers, weekends, and holidays off. Best of all, her work schedule coincides with the schedules of her children and she can be home with them when they are home. Just thought I would put this post up for anyone who wanted to consider being a teacher instead.
