Nurses in Other Professions

Hi!

I'm wondering how many of you know nurses that have taken on other careers rather than to continue with their nursing and why?

I'm too new to the profession to know any personally but a lady I worked with said she knew 5 former nurses who were working at the local Wal-Mart because it was less stressful and nursing was not about the money.

I am sure there are others...Care to share?

I don't personally know any, but there is an RN here in town who owns/manages several daycare centers. One of her selling points is that the owner is an RN.

Recently had a 12 year reunion from nursing school, majority of us still nursing - the vast majority part-time.

Other people are now

med reps x 3

alternative medicine x 2

doctor x 1

full time mums x 3

hospital accrediation x 1

and then there are those mystery people who seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth . jax

I'm thinking about going to Walmart.

Two of my former classmates have already left nursing and it's only been 16 months since we graduated. One didn't even bother to renew her license, but I didn't ask why.

I know a nurse that gave up nursing and now works in a florist shop. She says the money is bad, but she is so much happier, no stress.

My mother was in a mall recently and met a woman working at the food court who told her she's an RN, but couldn't take it anymore.

I know a new grad, whose been an LVN less than a year and has already left. Too bad, because she's really sharp. She's doing medical transcription from home. She says "The money is awful but so what?"

I have tried applying at a couple of vet's offices, but they never called me.

I'm tellin' ya', web Media site operator is sounding real good, right about now! ;-)

Joe, is this your career du jour list or simply viable options? I hear the Media operators make good $$$ :lol2:

When I lived in Columbus the lady that made my wedding cake was a former RN. She loved the cake making business and made good money. Think about it, a wedding cake costs hundreds of dollars and it's made of flour, sugar, butter and eggs. Sounds like a good profit margin to me.

we recently lost a great nurse to Bath & Body Works

saw her this past w/e, she looked great and is happier than I've seen her in a long time

no more "worry/stress lines" or dark circles under her eyes

she said she is making about the same amount because she is more than willing to work extra time, because she isn't so stressed and she'll have all the upcoming holidays pretty much off

she says she smells great ALL the time and gets a discount :chuckle

I left bedside nursing after 1 year for a research job and over the next several years moved around the country. As I moved, I took short-term or travel nursing positions, never more than 3 months at a time. Then I was out of nursing for 6 years. During all that time I felt like I was missing something by not practicing nursing, so I decided to go back to bedside nursing.

It is now one year later, and I'm going back to my nice Monday through Friday office job. You can keep those weekends, nights and holidays along with incompetent nursing management.

One other point: A master's degree in nursing does not necessarily qualify one to manage people! It doesn't even make sense to me.
