Hey NinjaNurse2005,

That's what I want to know; where is her critical thinking skill?

Gee...that President Obama has been in office a loooong time.

I was a journalist for 10 years earlier in my work life, and that news article that was quoted is basically just a press release from the company. If anyone was lacking critical thinking skills it was the journalist who has their byline on the article. They really dropped the ball when it comes to the many, many followup questions that should have been asked.

That said, as someone who had the bad luck to be diagnosed with lymphoma while uninsured, I am in favor of Obamacare. One of the reasons I'm going to nursing school is because I want to support low-income and underserved populations in accessing health care. I was 26 years old when I was diagnosed in 1996. I was between jobs (I had moved from VA to NC because I got engaged) and I had made the mistake of not electing COBRA coverage when I left my job in VA. I simply could not afford the premiums.

However ... I don't think I deserved to die from cancer just because I didn't have health insurance. But I would have, if not for a county social services program that paid for my chemo and radiation treatments.

I don't want to live in the society that allows that. I refuse to believe that the United States is "that" country, and once I'm licensed I plan on advocating, lobbying, and just generally being LOUD about how critical it is that we take basic care of our citizens. Even if they're poor. Even if they're unemployed.

I don't think people deserve to die just because they don't have health insurance.

I have no idea if Obamacare is ultimately going to work, how much it will really cost, or if it will benefit citizens in the long run. But I bet people were saying these same things, and asking these same questions, when Medicare was enacted in 1965.

Sometimes, you just have to try something new. Health care in the United States doesn't work. We spend more money than other industrialized countries, but have worse outcomes. Something is wrong. I don't know if Obamacare is the fix that is going to make things right, but I think we need to give it a shot.

Believe it or not, I have talked to more than one individual who believes people in your situation should[ have died; they would tell you that you were irresponsible and deserved to suffer the consequences. This came from a local website. I stopped going there because every thread was either a "Hate Obama" thread or a "Hate Trayvon Martin" thread. Before George Zimmerman blew Trayvon away, they hated Hispanics, too, but now Zimmerman is their hero.

I "hate" Obamacare for several reasons:

When the term was first used, it was used derisively by opponents. Just as some gays have taken the negative term Queer, and claimed it so it would lose its power, so has the President snatched the term "Obamacare" from opponents.

Also, healthcare coverage for all was first proposed by Nixon 40 years ago, and Romney introduced universal coverage to his state.

So, should we call it Romneycare, Obamacare, or Nixoncare? :sarcastic:

Silliness aside, I do support the ACA, just can't bring myself to display a I 'heart' OBAMACARE

I just dislike HEART stickers, tshirts, etc

Lots of people and groups have hijacked hate words to remove the power...

usually the haters don't get it and then complain..."well they use the (N,Q,C,whatever) word!!" or similar trying to justify their continued bigotry or racism, etc.

That part is always a bit amusing to me.

Those haters end up being the butt of a joke that they don't get. LOL

I know. But those people only believe that until they or someone they love is the one without healthcare who is critically ill. Then they change their tunes. It's a defect of not being able to put themselves in other people's shoes and realize, "There, but for the grace of _insert your higher power here_, go I."

A lot of people just don't realize how close they are - even through no fault of their own - to being one of those unemployed people whose health benefits are in jeopardy.

In other words, a lot of people are keeping their heads in the sand and refuse to believe those unpleasant truths?

I think it is a foolish fallacy to connect policy directly with personalities. I had (have) a rather low opinion of the last President, in the sense that I thought he was unsuited for the office. He was somewhat of an embarrassment to us as our representative on the international stage. But I never blamed him, personally, for "getting us in to a war based on lies" etc., because in my opinion GB II couldn't have gotten us into a Dairy Queen all by himself. There were a lot of much more nefarious, and let's face it, intelligent, people behind all of that. I never once accused GB of being "evil." I don't shout in ALLCAPS about war crimes, and I think that is a ridiculous accusation. Frankly, I think he is just an ordinary guy, elevated to a position totally beyond his capabilities by virtue of his connections. They used him, and I kind of feel bad for him. I think he spent his whole life trying to live up to his father's expectations and failed constantly. Being a presidential puppet for his Dad's friends was really his only chance to gain Daddy's approval. I hope, for his sake, that it worked. (shrug)

That is about the lowest thing I've ever said about him. I don't insult his supporters, except to say they are probably misguided in some cases, and vote against their own self interest. I certainly never insulted his wife or kids, and there was fodder for it I suppose, but it isn't my style. Spouse and kids are off limits.

Barack Obama strikes me as arrogant, but sincere. I think he was a true believer in the message he was selling 10 years ago, but he was incredibly naive about Washington politics. The reality is the President doesn't just get to do whatever he or she wants to. Guantanamo Bay = case in point. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes with regard to the Montasanto business, but that is, in my opinion, the biggest mistake of this presidency. Well, at least it is the thing I resent most.

The ACA must be a huge disappointment to him. It certainly was to those of us that voted for him. It isn't what he campaigned for, it isn't what he wanted, and we all know it doesn't go nearly far enough. He compromised far too much, and the watered down version of affordable care for all is really more like insurance protectionism. But is a start, and it is better than nothing. It is a step forward, and we will have to keep working on improving it, because there is still a lot of work to be done on increasing accessibility and controlling direct and indirect health care costs.

"Obamaphones" are one of my personal favorites among the urban myths. I can't believe that nonsense still gets reported as if it were fact.

What are you specific objections?

I don't think people should be required to buy health insurance. I'm sure most of the uninsured are not in that spot by choice. The employer mandate has been put off for a year, so where exactly are al these grand policies going to come from? I know the exchanges are supposedly the answer, but I'm skeptical. My main hesitation comes from the fact that Congress, their staffers, and the IRS are to be exempted from it. Why? If it's so magical, world-changing, and wonderful then they should be jumping at the opportunity to be the first to sign up.

Most of us don't really care how you educate yourself about issues unless you come spouting the poorly though out rhetoric of the parties and the party mouthpiece Fox News.

It is interesting that a well informed citizen actually "hates" our political leaders personally.

"Hate" is typically an emotional response that implies fear or a sense of injury. I wonder, have you hated other presidents?

I just spent a week with my brother from Michigan who is also, oddly, a voting republican that leans more libertarian. He is a fan of Ron but not Rand Paul. He certainly does not like this president, didn't like the last one either. He does not hate the man or the woman associated with this office...

Hate is sort of a personal touch to put on a political discussion.

My point about NPR was just to point out that a person can object to the ACA without ever tuning in to Fox News. Do you take as much offense to those who spout info and quotes from MSNBC? They are as biased as Fox, just the other side.

As far as hate goes, I guess it's because I have visceral reaction to the very sound of his voice. Maybe hate it too strong a word. Maybe I should just say detest. I feel the same way about Bill and Hillary Clinton. Upon hearing them speak or seeing them, it's like I've accidentally put my hand in the flyblown, rotting corpse of some animal. A full-body shudder.
