I don't think people should be required to buy health insurance. I'm sure most of the uninsured are not in that spot by choice. The employer mandate has been put off for a year, so where exactly are al these grand policies going to come from? I know the exchanges are supposedly the answer, but I'm skeptical. My main hesitation comes from the fact that Congress, their staffers, and the IRS are to be exempted from it. Why? If it's so magical, world-changing, and wonderful then they should be jumping at the opportunity to be the first to sign up.
Wow...great posts! This is the crux...that most people are missing and I am pulling this post out in particular since all along the poster seems to miss the point overall...The main issue with the ACA is that : THE INSURANCE COMPANIES STILL RUN THE SHOW! That is it! That determines whether you buy or do not buy etc...etc...blah blah blah! (So yes in a sense most are in particular spots by choice! They cannot afford it!!!) We desperately need a single payer system in this country (eg: Medicare starting at 18 etc...)-one form of it or another works for every other industrialized-supposed-enlightened society EXCEPT the USA that refuses to enjoy the benefits because as one poster alluded to...most humans are scared and stupid and in most cases here...totally misinformed.

I don't love that part either. I'd prefer that all people be able to get health care for free without insurance.

They have something better, as do I, a private option. The exchanges are for those that don't have, or have declined, other options
You know, something just happened at my job and thought it directly relevant to this thread.
I recently got a new position, was supposed to be full-time with full benefits. Shortly after getting hired, I found out that this position was going to be eliminated. They would help me find a new position, but the benefited one I was hired for would be no more. For those who want to stay in this position even with benefits no longer being part of the package, there would be a cap on the hours we can work, to 29.5 per week. The reason? If they let us work more, with the new changes due to the ACA, they would HAVE to give us benefits. So not only do we lose our benefits, but we can't work the hours we want to.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that people with pre-existing conditions can now get covered. Except that now, me and my daughter no longer have coverage. Fair?
It is disappointing to me that Americans are such suckers for any clumsy and silly propaganda. The examples of a large percentage of Americans being fooled by silly propaganda that any critical thinker should have been able to see through quickly are numerous. In the recent past we have the American invasion of Iraq, supported by 80+% of the sheep, er..... I mean people , right up to the supposed nursing shortage. It has been very disappointing to learn that for the most part, Americans are gullible and unsophisticated.
like!

You would still be eligible for private insurance...which in my experience was A LOT more budget friendly than employee insurance. You get to choose your insurance, and not run the risk of getting dropped or being risky if anything catastrophic happens-which actually happened to me, forcing me to take Medicaid, then Medicare, in order to recover and have access to healthcare; without those options, I wouldn't have had the ability to work as a nurse ever again.
Like all ideas turned into laws, it's a framework; it's far from perfect; we still need to tweak access to healthcare...it's been long needed. This is just the start.
My main issue with the current POTUS is that, prior to his presidency, he had no experience in running any government. Not a city, county or state. He was a JUNIOR senator from Illinois. WTH made him, or the Democratic Party, or the Democratic voters think he was remotely qualified to go from junior senator to POTUS?
(I realize "junior" might not be the right term. I think "freshman" might actually be what it's called. Regardless, he had precious little political experience before he spent the remaining balance of his senatorial term campaigning to be president.)
I think everyone SHOULD contribute to the cost of their healthcare. You buy food & housing, right? I think, in some cases, people don't prioritize. If you're unemployed, underemployed or destitute, then subsidies pick up some costs, based on some type of sliding scale.
But my idea probably isn't popular.

Actually, the insurance we were offered before the change was so much more affordable than anything else I had come across when I was looking for insurance, since the job I had before did not have coverage yet. But yea, I guess I can get more expensive, less comprehensive insurance now...sounds like a great plan. And since I make too much for Medicare to cover, looks like I'm screwed:-)

This is what I found when shopping for private insurance. It's more expensive & covers less than employer provided coverage.
I definitely don't think we need the US government running a national health care system. One look at Social Security or Medicare should put everyone off THAT notion.
*** Let's also consider that the federal government runs some of the finest health care in the country. Have you ever been a patient in a military hospital? I have as both a patient and a nurse and they are top notch.

*** Oh man do I ever totally understand how you feel! I had that exact same feeling on hearing the lesser Bush's voice or even at the sight of him. Ever time I saw him on TV I got mental images of the rotten corpses, blown apart children, raped women and maimed US troops that he decided to cause.
