I definitely don't think we need the US government running a national health care system. One look at Social Security or Medicare should put everyone off THAT notion.

One look at HCA or many of the other "fine" for-profits (or even non-profits) running hospitals should put everyone off the notion that greedy corporations should be in charge of our healthcare.

Lol, so then who? Government can't do it right and neither can private. So who does that leave?

You know, something just happened at my job and thought it directly relevant to this thread.

I recently got a new position, was supposed to be full-time with full benefits. Shortly after getting hired, I found out that this position was going to be eliminated. They would help me find a new position, but the benefited one I was hired for would be no more. For those who want to stay in this position even with benefits no longer being part of the package, there would be a cap on the hours we can work, to 29.5 per week. The reason? If they let us work more, with the new changes due to the ACA, they would HAVE to give us benefits. So not only do we lose our benefits, but we can't work the hours we want to.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that people with pre-existing conditions can now get covered. Except that now, me and my daughter no longer have coverage. Fair?

Don't blame the ACA!!! It is simply corporate greed!!!(And the insurance companies that still control things)They CAN afford to give you benefits, THEY DO NOT WANT TO!!! They are using-as so many have astutely noticed-the ACA and Obama as scapegoats for unbridled greed...again-this is what happens in capitalism. If you think as an individual human being you are worth anything, think again...you are nothing more than a number on a retail ledger...You answered your own question in your post...

Yes, yes especially when so many people refuse to even look at medicare etc...especially those in "congress" whatever that quoted word means anymore! Funny how the free market capitalist thugs do not realize or refuse (denial is wonderful aint it) to acknowledge our amalgam of socialism...

The fact that Social Security and Medicare are bankrupt?

Because the boys on Capitol Hill keep raiding one coffer to find another one & when they all run out, let's just BORROW more...

A whole new beauracracy? Why not? We've got DHS, Federal Reserve, FHA, VA FNMA, and on and on and on. Let's create another one that we can't pay for & borrow more money from other countries.

I think everyone SHOULD contribute to the cost of their healthcare. You buy food & housing, right? I think, in some cases, people don't prioritize. If you're unemployed, underemployed or destitute, then subsidies pick up some costs, based on some type of sliding scale.

But my idea probably isn't popular.

What proposal has there been which said nobody should contribute to the cost of their healthcare?

Medicare isn't government run healthcare, it's government run healthcare insurance. You don't go to a US government MD, a US government run hospital, etc. Healthcare itself is still very much private and for-profit.

In the role medicare plays, being the money middleman between patients and providers, it does a far better job than their private counterparts with operating costs of 2-4%, compared to 14-30% in the private sector.

That's not actually true, maybe you could provide evidence of that?

Medicare is certainly challenged trying to provide universal healthcare in an overall system that is based on an opposing philisophy, that's what should be fixed.
