I agree BrandonLPN - I work in a state run facility for developmentally disabled clients. Coming from a for-profit hospital I was like "wow!" Amazing what kind of nursing care we can give when the "middleman" is eliminated - insurance companies and the corporations.

The proof of the pudding in which system is more inefficient. Health care spending in the USA is 17.5% of GDP (private) Health care spending in the UK (public) is 9%. 100% of British residents, not citizens are covered. Despite the passage of "Obamacare" that is still not true of the USA. And yes, the British can also choose their doctors.

Furthermore, the system of employer based health insurance is nuts. So, if you get long term sick............guess you're not going to be working. So out the window with the health insurance. A pretty evil system, and all the arguments in the world about personal responsibility can be picked to shreds on this one.

So according to the ACA employers only have to insure their "full time" workers. So they are going to hire everyone on "part time" status.... Just like retail has been doing for years. WTH?

*** Now that they have suceeded in creating a large glut of nurses with their false and self-serving "nursing shortage" propaganda they have that option. Only a few years ago they couldn't even consider doing that or risk having nurses vote with their feet.

If I could like this more than once, I would!

I can't imagine my facility trying to run with nothing but part-time nurses. Actually, I can, but it's not a pretty picture. Kind of like working for K-Mart, if K-Mart were a nursing home.

I can't imagine it either...and I don't se it happening without affecting the nursing outcomes model.

It happens all the time. You take a "part time" job- expecting to work 2 or3 shifts a week - but then are constantly expected to fill in for vacant shifts - in my case I was usually working 32 hours a week - which was considered full time - but i was in a "part time" position so I had to pay more for health insurance, ect.

I believe there was a PP on this thread where another nurse gave an example of it as well

That sounds like a policy issue...there are places that do this  no is disputing that.

Totally dependent on the facility and organization.

I did my mother's taxes, and because of the ACA, I saw how much she paid towards her employer's insurance...it was the same amount I paid for my "private" insurance when I had private insurance...same type of plan, too.

if anything, the ACA will show how much one REALLY pays for insurance...and eliminate a mythical "employer preference"...It really is trying to force accountability for charging companies and individuals the amounts that they do.

I'll be interested (and am somewhat afraid) to see how my coverage changes when I go on Medicare in November. I know I'll have to buy a supplementary Medicare plan; I just hope I don't have to pay a king's ransom for it.

Yeah, the supplementary can be a killer when on disability...but for me not to worry about a bill, it was worth it.

If anything, I don't see anything changing; last year my meds did go down and costs were controlled when the first part of the ACA was rolled out, which was a good thing. I expect things to be the same...the SSA would've said something by now.

I'm going to see how returning to work does for me. I at least want to keep my Medicare.
