I voted, "NO."
This was a bill that was forced on the american people despite the wishes of the majority of our population. It was nothing short of a power grab by the Democrats. It had everything to do with trying to keep Obama's presidency from being a failure (too late) and nothing to do with protecting the interests and freedoms of the American people.
I can appreciate the plight of people who have no insurance. I've been there before. And I, unfortunately, end?ed up incurring thousands of dollars worth of bills when I broke my leg. You know what I did?
I got a better job that had benefits. I worked hard, and paid off my debt via a payment plan. I went without some niceties in the meantime.
I've worked very hard to get where I am today. It is a stressful environment with a lot of responsibility and liability involved. And I expect to be compensated well for my efforts. Healthcare costs money. Advances in medical care costs money. Medical training costs money. Just how do people think we plan on financing these things sufficiently under a socialized program? We're going to see rationing of care and a deterioration of the standard of care for our patients.
I have a family of my own that I am doing my darndest to support. I don't need to be supporting somebody else's. People make poor life decision - unplanned pregnancy, choose the wrong person to marry, don't perform in school so you cannot get a decent job... Sorry. You aren't my problem. That's on you and YOUR family / friends / support group. Not mine. I know it sounds cold hearted, but I am. When it comes to taking away from my being able to provide for my family, I'll be a heartless bastard.
We definitely needed some measure of reform. But it needed to be along the lines of tort reform and allowing interstate commerce to occur in purchasing/shopping for insurance plans.
On top the fact that I have a visceral abhorrence for the sheer depth, scope and breath of influence that the federal government has developed over the lives of our citizens, there is also the fact that this law is UNCONSTITUTIONAL in the manner of its implementation. It is FORCING us to purchase insurance. The federal government has the right to regulate interstate commerce. However it does not have the right to FORCE us to engage in interstate commerce. This bill is a bad thing.
Hopefully we will be able to prevent funding for it and then repeal / replace it after Obama is voted out of office.
how much do you really know about this bill?
Thats interesting you should ask that. Because he probably knows just as much (including the president) as the politicians that voted it through. The better question would be how much do you know about it? You defend it as though you have read it. I would love to hear all the facts about this bill. Please inform all of us if you will.
My only question to you is, how comfortable are going to feel giving your child the kind of health care that politicians of the president himself will not be receiving? If its not good enough for his family, isnt it like he is telling everyone, "Well its not good enough for me, but it will do for you."?
I can't wait. I completely agree with you. They said this about Medicare and the New Deal. Lyndon Johnson was the ultra liberal who forced Medicare through congress. The Supreme Court struck down several parts of the New Deal before public perceptions of these social welfare programs changed.

President Obama is no dictator. He has millions of Americans who back and support him and his goals. Remember when we all thought Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic choice for President, and how blown away some of us were, when it was Obama? That tells the story. He is dynamic, inventive and LISTENS to people.
Reform of Health Care was the acclaimed first goal to tackle (before the banks notoriously stole the scene, and presented an urgency that couldn't be ignored). Both those situations involved lack of concern for human rights, humans who weren't very rich were expendable, according to big business, pharmaceutical and insurance companies!
You had to be employed (receiving pay above $150,000/year), insured and healthy to get anywhere in this country, before President Obama was elected. Those who weren't in that exclusive group died prematurely, were as chained to "wheels" they pushed for the rest of their lives (think medieval), and ANGRY (ripe for disgruntled Republican rhewtoric and lies).
Youth who saw dim futures for themselves joined gangs and created havoc all over, in the atmosphere of payback. At least they could have power among their own ethnic group. Usually power comes with money, and in the case of rebellious teens, becoming drug dealers accomplished that. That attracts "havenots" like moths to flame! Now the job needs to be the renovation/rehabilitation of thugs that are now in existence, and working with parents, teachers, and preschoolers to assure that the new generations have better self esteem and parents modelling socially acceptable behavior.
Realise that every angry statement said at home, is projected into little kids' minds like a projectile. Every time you go home to your young families complaining about someone with whom you work, administration, politicians, etc. and voice what you'd like to see bring them down, those spongelike little minds sop up that information. They'll want to please you, when they put into action the emotions you expressed. Remember that!
President Obama is role modelling for us, the type of brilliant family man he is, as his wife does. Many people can't believe that anyone is really as upright as he appears, and can't wait for the Inquirer to come up with something nasty. If it existed, we would have heard about that, by now. Those of us who allow ourselves to dream, shower him with white light (the ones who go in for that type of thing) and mention him in their prayers. That support is what carries him forward, and believe me, his supporters aren't in the minority!
I'm part of his "Organising for America" group, which is present all over the USA, encouraging their representatives in government to support goals that do the most good for the most people. It is very heady to belong to that and know that we will win such good things. When I heard about the "bailout" money of $25 million given to Citibank, becoming multiple billions in our treasury, as it was paid back with stock and that has grown exponentially, I smiled. The financial advisors really know what they're doing. They also know how much money the extra taxes for the quite rich will bring, which is why they say that not only will the medical costs be met; also the debit will go down because of that. And our morbidity and mortality stats will diminish!! I BELIEVE.
There was some grumbling when gas guzzling luxury cars were taxed more heavily than others decades ago, but no big protest occurred because those who bought monster vehicles knew they'd have to accept and pay for getting what they thought they wanted. Now I wonder what on earth China will do with the Hummer. However, the tiny (by comparison) hybrid Prius still sold in many countries, like nothing else. Now Toyota is getting attacked, due to an undiscoverable defect. Isn't that a kick? There are as many theories about that, as there are Toyota owners who wonder what went wrong with the cars they'd learned to love, that saved their hard earned money. Notice that gas prices are going through the roof, while the oikl costs are down. Be very concerned about those who can't stand success!
The majority of the American people (according to almost all polls) clearly demonstrate that they are not in support of this health bill. I heard a statistic the other day that prior to Obama becoming President, 29% of the U.S. economy was run by the federal Government. Since he became President, 36% is run by the U.S. government, and after Obamacare (and possible Cap and Trade/tax), 46% of our economy will be controlled by the U.S. Government. Many European nations are holding around 42-49 percent. We are heading into socialism.
About Obama being a role model.....when he was a State Senator for Illinois, he voted on a bill with respect to the rights of an infant born alive during a botched abortion. He voted that the infant should not be given any medical treatment as the rights of the mother superseded its rights. He actually spoke on this issue, and I have heard a tape/transcript of what he said. He is not MY role model.
Obama the dictator? I recall reading an article quoting a European leader (Cringe!!! Heck, maybe a French Dude at that!!!) who was speaking to President Obama about his efforts to achieve universal health care...according to the article, the comments expressed by this European leader to Obama went something like, I can't believe the American people are comparing you to Hitler, when you're trying to give them universal health care.
I've often wondered if people hate the message of universal health care, or the messenger, President Obama?
As a nation, should we provide every citizen universal health care, and by that, do we mean just ER treatment, or health care that is universal and all encompassing?
Personally, I think it's patriotic to help our fellow citizens, especially those needing care. Others see this as being socialistic.
I tend to think that people believing that health care should be market based, have a Darwinian view of life...survival of the fittest...only the wealthy should prosper and have the best medical care.
Do I think that the current health care legislation is the best? No.
I'm concerned the insurance industry will be the big winners; that they will receive more money from mandated customers; raise premiums; and still exclude people with pre-existing conditions; while still limiting health care through various exclusions.
Do I hate the poor/indigent who are unable to afford health care? No, that's just hateful. Should I think of examples of some lazy slob who's sponging off my tax dollars to get free health care? Or, should I think about the person who's striken with some disease, cancer, injury, etc.,...whose family posts placards in stores, on facebook, etc., requesting funds for medical costs...with a jar full of pennies, dimes, etc.?
Sorry for the ramble, but there's just too much hatred, and in my opinion, there needs to be more compassion and solidarity.
I like to think that as a whole, people are compassionate and caring. We give money at church (for what, our good conscience? that little girl whose parents have the penny jar at the convenience store for her surgery?); we give money for Haiti (honorable in and of itself); so, why do we have hang ups about paying to care for our fellow citizens? Are we just that dang competitive and stingy?

I know that allnurses.com, a privately run entity has declared "politics" off limits, but no guidelines as to where that line is drawn, have been given. I recall that nursing school instructors told me that politics and religion are topics of conversation that are off limits for nurses when talking to patients.
Those topics have heated up considerably since then (1957), and I'm more sure than ever that patients' homeostasis would be adversely affected if we do enter into that arena with them...... However I can't for the life of me figure out why it's taboo to discuss political issues of the day that affect and inform us, nurse to nurse on this website, even though we have a self declared "anxious patient" participating here.
If there is some fear that our microcosm will be seen as leaning one way, that has been shown not to be true. I believe geographical location drives opinion, which is the reason polls that are done in one part of the country are not reliable. They're as insufficient as medical studies without a control group!
We have a group of fundamental Christians who are quite zealous, among us, as well as those of other religions espousing their views. We all know where opposition to abortion originates, as well as lack of consideration for each other's views. If it was possible, I'd like to impose a restriction regarding the use of this wonderful arena, to leave religion out of it, too. It's hard to tell whose views are being written when religion gets into it, unfortunately
- just as the possibility of party lines can be the source of political opinions. Both would be, in effect a limiting measure that gags colleagues.

I have always disrespected Nancy Pelosi, because she has money wasting, hairbrained ideas that only an ultra liberal minded person who doesn't care how the taxpayers' money is spent would come up with. I am not happy with our lives being ruled by any government. The poster who mentioned our values as a nation have declined and we have gotten much too far from the way our nation was created as being free to choose and takes away personal responsibility. We became a great nation by the prayers, the hard work, and the kindness and foresight of our forefathers who gave their lives for it. May we ever be grateful for that. Our freedom is being taken away from us little by little.
