Nurses found out what im making, dont know how ?

Published

(I am a nurse)

Not long ago I got a promotion at work, and I got flack for it from coworkers. Whatever over.

Recently a coworker tells me they were all talking about how much im making now. Ive never discussed ANYTHING about my financials with anyone from work.

If my situation turns ugly because of this (ie people pissed off over money) is there anything I can do about this ? Especially since I never discussed anything with anyone at all?

Is this a legal issue since im not a public/union worker, and I dont see how/why people would have access to my financials ?

Am I protected in someway against any kind of retribution against me ?

Im not interested in making a big stink about anything. But if people start demanding I get demoted and/or a paycut because of whatever im gonna be extraordinarily upset.

I dont know how/what to do about the situation

Maybe they think they know how much you make because they knew how much the person that had the position before you was making and they are just assuming you are making what they made.

Well, Farawyn will tell ME, but it won't go any farther. Promise.

Lies. Jensmom will tell ME next.

In all seriousness, I'm sorry. It does sound like you work in a pond of piranhas who are jealous. (And want your money.) I don't have any advice other than if you got the promotion the higher ups obviously like how you work so ignore the haters.

I can quote Taylor Swift if you would like...

Do you work for a university medical center? Those are sometimes considered "state" salaries and thus are public record (as they are in Virginia for employees who make over the mean state salary).

In my state, nurses employed at our public university hospital are considered 'state employees.' All state employee salaries are reported as public knowledge (in my state anyway), since the salaries are paid in part by the taxpayers. That particular hospital system employs thousands of nurses, and it takes about 2 minutes to find any one of their individual salaries online (as well as salaries of all nurses who work in the Health Department).

Not sure if that applies in your situation, but if so it could explain how they know all of your 'private' info.

But don't want the responsibility.

That's what gets me fired up about these gossip types. So diluted they are. They will cry all day about what you get, but having to do what you do to get it......would just make them cry more.

If the grass is so much greener on the other side, maybe you didn't water your lawn enough.

I had to deal with these types when I was a Travel RN. So full of envy over my apartment being paid for. But, they would never consider being so far from family, wanted every holiday off, couldn't handle any patient assignment that wasn't pregnant with all the accommodations they required and don't bother asking them to work on any shift other than their preferred shift.

That's why you can't have what I get, you can't handle what I do.

Getting flack of any kind isnt my concern.

Its the higher ups getting flack, and how that could impact me which is a concern

Relax and enjoy your new, hard earned position.

"Well a coworker I trust told me they heard them all gossiping about it, and were talking about the exact number (but they refused to tell me the exact number, because they dont wanna get dragged into the middle of this)"

This still seems like a generalization. They refusing to tell you the exact numbers seems like trickery just so that you'll spill the beans. Focus on your new job and less on trivialities such as this. Congrats and best wishes.

At the last hospital ER I worked, RNs were paid on a scale related to # years one was a nurse.....at that time with some 40/yrs. Being a RN, I was at the top, The hospital. Also published how much more they would pay for a floater between three specialities.....it would not be hard for someone to guess close to what I made.......me, I felt about time.....as in 1972, RNs started in the south ~$8000.00+\year. 🙈

Well a coworker I trust told me they heard them all gossiping about it, and were talking about the exact number (but they refused to tell me the exact number, because they dont wanna get dragged into the middle of this)

This sounds like a bait and switch to me. He/she told you about the gossip but refused to say the exact amount. Hummmmm

You're grown and I can't tell you what to do. I'm not very trusting of people and I don't have friends that are direct coworkers. My favorite saying is people are always going to talk so let them.

Make sure you have a copy of your job description and perform your job accordingly. If you are performing your job well and according to the job description then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. You need to stop worrying about those coworkers who may or may not be gossiping about you.
