  1. Maybe look into home care agencies and look into 3rd shift options. Many of the girls I work with that are 3rd shift have time for study time. You are usually around for help if they need help going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, or to help with changing position in bed.
  2. When your CNA sences are on high alert when you see a elderly person in the grocery store and you think what do I have to do help them. You feel you need to be right there and walk next to them to try to catch them if they fall. (Where is that gait belt when you need it)

A lot of money no weekends or holidays.....hmmm nursing no....politics yes
  4. As long as you did not sign any paperwork that requires you to work X amount of time after getting the certification you are under no obligation legally to have to work for them. Though I do agree that it looks alittle shady to jump to another job as soon as you are certified. If you can... hold out just a few months to 6 months and then go for that hospital job. After all in your heart you might feel you owe them a little of your time being they just gave you free CNA classes that many of us pay 100s of dollars toget.
  5. The one I actually did myself was bring my few day old baby to the er with me and my husband when I was the patient. I had a C-Section and one night started to bleed what seemed like a pretty good amount of fresh blood and I was starting to feel funny and weak.. Called my doctor who advised me to head to the er in case I was hemorrhaging. I had to make a decision on what to do with my daughter because I was breast feeding her and had no milk pumped and had no formula on hand to have my mom be able to take her. We did not like it but brought her to the er with us. She stayed in her car seat the whole time and thankfully slept the whole time. We did not have to stay long and it was shown I maybe had a small pocket of blood that ruptured but nothing serious.
  6. No house keeping is not on state boards because it is set up mainly for those that work in a ltc setting. However we CNAs that work home care are in a more unique setting. We provide a service were people can get personal one on one care that they need while still being able to stay home instead of being in a ltc facility. Now part of that also means that the house needs to be taken care of too. There is laundry that needs to be done. Meals that need to be prepared. House work that needs to be done because you want your clients to be living in a clean healthy environment. There ate some home care CNA that do provide personal care only. But those visits are maybe an hour at the very most and they see many people in one day. While other home care CNAs provide round the clock care which then yes we need to make sure the home is running smoothly for our clients
  7. As a graduating nursing student you should be able to take the CNA States test without taking the class. If you want to work as a CNA for a little bit till you pass the NCLEX it might not be a bad idea if you need the money to start to pay off the loan. But agree with the others and study for NCLEX and pass it as soon as you can so you can start looking for a nursing job. Good luck I hope you pass the next time
  8. Is there somewhere in the field of teaching that you could love and still use your teaching degree. What about being a tutor either private or working at a place like Sullivan. There are a lot of online programs as well that might be looking for qualified teachers.
  9. I'd say it can all depend on what about CNA work you did not like. Being a nurse can be totally different then being a CNA. But if you dont like the health care environment then nursing might not be for you. I think shadowing a nurse would be a great thing to do to experience the feeling of not only what the job of a nurse entales but also the feel of hospital life to see if it is an environment you want to have a career in. Good luck.. no matter which way you decide it has to be what your gut tells you
  10. Yes what you are describing can be true. But our agency has a minimum 2hr visits. We don't go to 7 homes in a day.
  11. Being in home care can be difficult. You will have clients that you will love like your own grandparents and then there will be clients that you want to just hide under you covers when the morning comes and wish it was the next day so you will not have to go to their house. Everyone handles things differently, and I am not saying you are 100% wrong in your actions and comments, but I will say that some of the things that said probably did not help the situation any. I'd never turn the lights back off after she turned them on, or tell them I'll do that next time if they wanted you yo do something. to be honest no matter how horrible they are I personally never talk back to them. If anything I either say nothing or try to defuse the problems by asking them questions on how do you like things done.. and I also would say to them that I am new to this and if you just give me a little time I know I can do things to your liking and the way you want it. Also for instance when you found out after cleaning the mop she wanted bathroom done, I might feel a little upset about it but I just do it.. I'd would have said oh I did not know you wanted that done I'll do that right now for you. If you gave it a good effort with good attitude and she is still bratty then I'd call and ask to be taken off the case. As for the house work in general it is very normal to have shifts like this. You might help them with a shower and the rest of your time can be house keeping. I always say if you don't want to do housework then don't get into home care. It part of the job. If you only want to do personal care then work in ltc or rehab.
  12. Maybe they are already in nursing school and they are studying a unit about IVs right now. I agree that I don't understand the obsession over IVs if you are only a pre nursing student
  13. But...but...but there are so many people out there that need to know about how special of a snowflake they truly are. Isn't it our duty to make sure they know this about themselves.
  14. Just last night I had some out of town guest, and after they left our house I went to plug my phone in my charger and saw I had a voice mail from work listened to it and they said they had a no call no show and was wondering if I could call back. Well the shift was a 7p-10p shift. It was almost 8p when they left the voice mail and it was 10 to 10p when I got the message. Well not sure if it got covered but it wasn't by me this time. :)
  15. 100% online class.....nope you won't find it. Like PP said you have to do clinical somewhere. Its probably a place that the class has access to. My class was able to go to the local VETS home. It was a great experience.
