A recent study led by Vanderbilt University professor Peter Buerhaus polled registered nurses about two timely issues -- the state of health care and the importance of the issue in the upcoming election.
With a close election expected, the country's three million registered nurses could make a difference in the election, Buerhaus says.
Most nurses interviewed support some form of universal health care coverage, although opinions vary on just how extensive coverage should be.
Very few approve of the country's health care system as it stands now, the survey shows.
...Slightly more than half, or 51 percent, believe that if all nurses could join together to address one health problem, it would be the number of uninsured Americans.

No matter what - we are going to be taxed. Why not demand we get the most for our money?? Taxes should increase the quality of life- we already pay as much tax as people in other countries with national health care. Shouldn't we have it then? That and other benefits like vacation and sick time.Without significant reform our taxes will go up and so will our working hours and out of pocket costs for everything from food to healthcare- irregardless of who is prez.
In the debate last night, Barack Obama stated that increased taxes wouold be levied only for those who earn more than $250,000/year when he assumes thye Presidency. Those in that high a bracket have escaped most of the taxes you and I have, as they have enough money to buy tax shelters. Some really rich folks pay no taxes at all. Those are McCain's friends, our present President and Chaney and his buddies.
They have no concerns about their fellow citizens/tax payers, being "above" them, and simply can't understand how little healthcare coverage would come out of a $5,000 tax creadit for healthcare insurance. Employers, though would think they didn't have to pay for their employees' healthcare since they have an allotted amount for that! There's nothing in McCain's platform about lowering premiums for healthcarer insurance. Just as AIG's executives did after receiving their part of the $7,000,000,000 bailout, they would go on gouging the public and having (less publicized, I hope) spa weeks!
My son-in-law works in the water department of his city, earning well under $40,000 annually, and pays $700/month ($8400 yearly - $3400 above the yearly credit so "generously offered"...) in addition to the coverage included in his position, for health insurance for his wife and children. Since my daughter (with MS) and her daughter (with congenital malconstruction of her ear - no ear drom, canal, or inner parts), so they have "preexisting conditions"; and no other healthcare coverage would be available for them. Digging ditches for water lines caused back problems for my son-in-law, so should he need workers' compensation he'd lose his job shortly and with it their health insurance.
The stress of waiting for that "axe" to fall, increases recurrences and exacerbation of MS symptoms...... and if the surgery my granddaughter needs in't possible she could lose her hearing. How, in good conscience anyone would vote for McCain, on that point alone, is unbelievable to me.
Obama's plan would eventually eliminate healthcare insurance high priced executives, and oversight of offenses in billing would cut those costs.
My goodness, medications wouold be covered (I'm on one that costs $96. weekly), and the higher expense of increased disability would be curtailed. My daughter's MS injectable drug costs $4,000/month excluding, and has been more expensive for them, since Blue Cross suddenly makes them pay $400/month for it, from $40/month copay.
The fear of government driven healthcare is a paper tiger, as health professionals will make medical decisions, and the government will have a cashier role, onoly. As was pointed out in an earlier post, our taxes are high and without billions paid to insurance compasnies' "administrative costs", we won't be yaxed more for that benefit, unless McCain gets in, pointing out that we've been given $5,000, so of course our taxes have to cover that! And no credit exists in that plan for the unemploiyed and insuranceless folks out there......:heartbeat
That shouoldn't make your choice of candidates difficult!
Heh. Some people are sociopaths. Some people feel paranoid all the time. Feelings can't always be trusted.
Hmmmm........let me see how this statement adds up:
Vote+McCain=sociopath+paranoia
From that, one can extrapolate that voting for the Republican ticket makes one mentally ill........at least, according to some.
Not nice.

Wow... Nice how you can infer the whole DSM + hate speech from my little post.
As someone that IS mentally ill (bipolar) you might want to reconsider the accusation that I am calling YOU mentally ill.
The only thing I said was feelings can't be trusted now can they...

Stop paying for an illegal war, and stop paying to support corporate America and we can afford the absolute best health care for everyone within our borders.
i was trying to keep to the issues. well, after this evening, the gloves are off and the heels are on. mccain/palin were in my hometwon this evening. school let out at noon despite the fact that their visit wasn't scheduled until 5pm.
i submitted this to my paper:
live in strongsville- saw the rally- the basketball gym at our rec center can not hold thousands!
sadly, this evening my seven year old came running into the house yelling "mom who are you voting for?"
senator obama, i replied. oh no he said, the other guy is evil. you can't have an evil president.
i didn't know whether to laugh or cry...
his young friend down the street had been to the rally- told him all about it.
silence in the face of hatred is not fit to lead!
strongsville hs home to rampant kkk loving students, another reported last year on "why we should kill gays"- complete with photo's from the internet. my 16 year old was made to endure this hate filled presentation during english class.
silence in the face of hatred is unfit to lead!
campaigning in my own neighborhood the other day with a woman who is now a us citizen from a middle eastern country- worried about knocking on her neighbors doors because other s like her were cursed and and called terrorist. i apologized for my fellow white middle class americans.
silence in the face of hatred is not fit to lead!
john mccain and sarah palin - ignored shouts from the crowd yelling "kill him" and "terrorist"- after pausing in recognition of hearing the comments.
silence in the face of hatred is not fit to lead. this is what i taught my son tonight he may not understand it but if mccain/palin win this election someday he will understand all too well.
watch this video, also filmed at the mccain-palin rally today:

Thanks for figuring this out! I'd personally question whether a McCain voter had opposable thumbs!!!
But certainly on the issue of healthcare alone, there is no dispute here. It has to be fear that keeps us strapped to a system that fails working class people. I actually had a child in a country that had socialized medicine (real socialized--single payor system) and it was wonderful. If you didn't like your publicly funded physician you could upgrade for 30 euros, which at that time was around 26 us dollars. I had a physician, private room and a midwife all at my disposal. And no drive-by deliveries there.. no mam.. One week standard for a normal uneventful lady partsl delivery... My check out bill-nada.. We paid prior with a 20% value-added tax, already calculated into goods and services so we noticed things were expensive, but didn't obsess about it.. hell we were living in Europe.. We now live in Los Angeles and are actually taxed...through multiple entities at a much higher rate than when we lived in Europe!
I had my son in Texas, a preemie me out the door in 24 hours and his 1.5 month stay in the NICCU... 40 grand.
RN Power Ohio:
That first video is DISGUSTING! I live in San Francisco, CA and am so disconnected with this. It's scary! But after watching the ignorance spew from their mouths, I want more so than ever for Obama to become the next president. The McCain campaign is DISGUSTING. I wrote him a long letter on racism and Sara Palins "do nothing" response to her audience member.
I fear deeply of the McCain camp. After this escapade, they are like devils:(
Godspeed Obama!!
Granted Palin may not get alot of women voters, but Obama wont either.
It looks as though he's pulling ahead in the polls with women.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama has built a 4-point lead over Republican rival John McCain in the race for the White House, aided by growing support from women and independent voters, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Thursday.

What will it take to stop hatred in this nation?
:bluecry1:
I wish I knew. But after seeing that video, it's scary that people have remained still for so long; living in their tiny little boxes with their worlds painted as perfect as they were CENTURIES ago. I do not think that in my lifetime we will ever see a cease to racism; and I'm 39. I remember watching a Jerry Springer show years ago where these people in the south (the bible belt) bear children and instill in them, the ideals of racism and white pride. It's shameful and scary.

Well, because of the 10 TRILLION dollar debt that the wonderful GWB has gotten us in over the last eight years, even when he had a BILLION dollar surplus, we the tax payers will have to pay that debt back. How do you think we will be able to pay that debt back that GWB acquired? Either president who takes office, is going to have to raise taxes, significantly. There is NO OTHER WAY AROUND IT, sadly.
I have closely analyzed each candidates records, their ideas and their voting histories b/c this election is SO IMPORTANT to me and others. I really feel when I see Obama out and about with people, he connects with them. When I see him and hear him talk about his plans for this country, I see not ONLY hope, but strength in him and he inspires me to be more than I already am. I am already a humanitarian, but I find myself digging deeper with him.
McCain on the other hand led me to dismay. His body language when he spoke to people, his weird facial movements. I felt disconnected and worried that we would be in the same position, if not worse if he was elected.
Change as proven over the years, comes from the ground up. It doesn't just fall into your hands. You have to make it happen. If Obama is elected, I have absolutely NO DOUBT that this country will get on track, really get involved and make change happen. I don't know what you are seeing when you are turning on the television, or what you are reading. No one can make up your mind for you. But, I can encourage you to go to both of their websites and read about their plans for this country. You may not approve of the choices we have, but they are not going away. We need to elect the BEST MAN for the job and imo, after researching, is NOT McCain.
Obama:)
