Nurses and the 2008 election

Published

A recent study led by Vanderbilt University professor Peter Buerhaus polled registered nurses about two timely issues -- the state of health care and the importance of the issue in the upcoming election.

With a close election expected, the country's three million registered nurses could make a difference in the election, Buerhaus says.

Most nurses interviewed support some form of universal health care coverage, although opinions vary on just how extensive coverage should be.

Very few approve of the country's health care system as it stands now, the survey shows.

...Slightly more than half, or 51 percent, believe that if all nurses could join together to address one health problem, it would be the number of uninsured Americans.

I don't know. B- in my book. Loved the way she read from a script and her winking was childish.Sorry, I just don't think that is character enough to run a country, AT ALL. You betcha *wink, wink*

Oh yes, and the kicker. The correct word would be, nuclear, not nuculer!! LOL...

I've been in Canada the past week, and found it very interesting that Canada`s election of the Prime Minister (equivalent to our President) will be Oct. 14, 2008. Yet the news coverage is predominantly American - the financial debaucle topping all else, and our election next in numbers of articles - no matter which newspaper it is in.

More Canadians tuned in to the Biden-Palin debate, than they did to the debate of their own candidates (held at the same time). It certainly was more entertaining to watch Sarah`s winks and avoidance of questions, than their own `to the point` discussion of issues, in true debate format.

It is a forgone conclusion here, that Barak Obama-Joe Biden will be elected. There is a clear division here between church and state, and always has been. It is beyond the comprehension of citizens of other countries, that a team of `Mavericks`will win, over the clearly outlined platform and well intentioned appeal of the Democrats` educated, serious and experienced team of lawyers (Obama having taught Law at Harvard for 12 years). :yeah:

By the way, the salaries here in Toronto are very good for Nurses, and we`re desperately needed! Hospitals aren`t glitzy here, but the equipment is up to date, and there are fewer problems between staff and management.

Lots of work to do out there to educate the people who have no idea how harmful a McCain presidency will be. Remember our ANA has endorsed Obama and that is based on our future as Nurses and his vision for Health Care policy. Please keep working hard to educate.

Exactly! I wish people could look at both sides with fair judgment and an open mind. I was raised a very conservative republican and my father served eight years in a republican office in the conservative state of Colorado. They are voting for Obama and Biden. They have looked at both candidates fairly and recognize that Obama offers solutions that are new and not the same old, same old of the last eight years that has gotten us into the mess(es) we're in.

IT`S HARD TO HAVE EQUAL LEANINGS, WHEN ONLY ONE PARTY LEADER HAS OUTLINED HIS STRATEGY FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS. Obama`s clearly outlined plans for our country`s less expensive healthcare, financial, and educational programs; cutting the high (obscenely unwarranted) salaries of CEOs of insurance providers have great appeal for me, over the echoed `change`promised by McCain.

The difference was underlined at a garage sales I attended, in Williamsburg, VA last weekend. The palatial places at which sales occurred, mostly had McCain signs on their manicured lawns; and the buyers`cars mostly had Obama bumper stickers.:D

Please remember and respect that there are well-educated and thoughtful nurses who believe that Obama's policies would be disastrous for our society. The ANA does not speak for all nurses. That they try to put forth the appearance of doing so is one reason why I no longer belong. Oh, and I am "working hard to educate"!

I'm happy to announce that for the first time in my life, I put a bumper sticker on the back of my car. "Nurses for Obama/Biden 08". Purchased from the ANA site. I really feel it's a good voice and it speaks volumes to people when they see it on my car. I love when people who ask me how I feel about the health care dilemma. I always take that opportunity to educate about both McCain and Obama.

I'm a nurse and I'm an advocate for people and their health and so this is why Obamas health care plan is best for you, your family and mine.

It's truly mind boggling when I hear someone say they support McCain/Palin. Give me good reasons I say. I never hear "good", nor logical reasons for their support. It's frustrating. People really don't realize how serious this election is. It's not about picking someone because they claim to be a maverick. Or not vote for someone b/c they hear he is going to raise taxes. ***GET THE FACTS BEFORE YOU VOTE***

BTW..loved it when Biden called Palin out on the "Maverick"!! It was one of the BEST things he said in that debate. McCain lost his maverick style, years ago.

Obama/Biden 2008 All the way to the white house! GOD SPEED:)

Continuous education is the cornerstone to responsible living (you may quote me on that). While you may disagree with ANA, wouldn't it have been more effective to argue your points within that organization? You can always agree to disagree.....

"Well educated and thoughtful nurses" reflect the type of person who is atttracted to our profession. Some of us, however lack time to read lengthy newspaper accounts, others are invited "to the fountain but won't drink".

This thread does a mighty job to keep nurses current regarding changes in leadership that will affect us in our professional, family, and community

relationships. Sharing accurate information is a way to keep our heads above the current financial and healthcare fracas, to make decisions that voting will implement. :nurse:

This is going off topic, I apologize. But why is it that every doctor upon graduating med school must become a member of the AMA? Regardless, of whether or not they agree with the associations ideals, values and stances on certain issues?

Lots of members=lots of power. AMA=POWER, lots of it!

Nurses have the power, they just don't utilize it. The ANA should have more members in order to have a larger voice and more power in the areas that matter.

Physicians don't have to join the AMA.

It is my belief that my time and money are better spent joining and supporting professional organizations that focus on nursing care, not politics. If I want to support a political cause, I'll do that by way of political organization.

I realize other people have different philosophies, this is just mine :)

I dont and have not really ever been a supporter of the ANA. I am myself. However I also endorse Obama. I campaign for him quite a bit locally.

To educate hopefully the cause of the Democratic party which we dearly need to be in the White House.
