A recent study led by Vanderbilt University professor Peter Buerhaus polled registered nurses about two timely issues -- the state of health care and the importance of the issue in the upcoming election.
With a close election expected, the country's three million registered nurses could make a difference in the election, Buerhaus says.
Most nurses interviewed support some form of universal health care coverage, although opinions vary on just how extensive coverage should be.
Very few approve of the country's health care system as it stands now, the survey shows.
...Slightly more than half, or 51 percent, believe that if all nurses could join together to address one health problem, it would be the number of uninsured Americans.

The state of health care in our country leaves much to be desired in my opinion. I am glad someone thought to poll nurses, as we are on the front line and do have a special insight into our nations health care problems. I think that we should definitely join together and step up to solve the very real and growing problem of the uninsured in our country. I hope that real issues like health care get brought to the forefront of this upcoming presidential debate/campaign and it doesn't turn in to some smear fest that solves nothing like the last few elections. I, like many nurses, fully and proudly support a gradual move to universal health care coverage.

Being uninsured is not fun. I haven't been able to pass my boards, and b/c of the policies of the hospital I work at in terms of how Student Grads get bumped down, I simply can't afford it. I've worked in finance and this is my second career. There is no easy solution to solve this problem no matter what either candidate states!!!!!!!!

it is clear to me that even a cursory look at the polictical threads, just here, clearly indicated a lack of homogeny among nurses. there are nurses to the left, right, and middle of the road. while there is agreement that what we have in the us now ain't working, the jury is all over the place on the best solution......

could you please explain what you meant? i don't understand what you are trying to say.
you are quite correct in saying that we as nurses have varying political opinions. we are supposed have different opinions. the most important thing we can all do is to go vote. irregardless as to how the elections turn out, we will still need to unite and support our elected officials. this doesn't mean that we stop vocalizing our concerns. we must continue to voice our concerns to our congressmen and congresswomen.
