Nurses and the 2008 election

Published

A recent study led by Vanderbilt University professor Peter Buerhaus polled registered nurses about two timely issues -- the state of health care and the importance of the issue in the upcoming election.

With a close election expected, the country's three million registered nurses could make a difference in the election, Buerhaus says.

Most nurses interviewed support some form of universal health care coverage, although opinions vary on just how extensive coverage should be.

Very few approve of the country's health care system as it stands now, the survey shows.

...Slightly more than half, or 51 percent, believe that if all nurses could join together to address one health problem, it would be the number of uninsured Americans.

Right on!!!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The only issue that McCain/Palin seem to care about is the horrifying prospect of a black president.

Well thanks to them and their ignorant base we can all be assured that President Obama will have thw chance to show America how to truly lead.

The audacity of hope indeed!

McCain and Obama Health Care Proposals: Cost and Coverage Compared

In this study, The Lewin Group estimated the cost and coverage impacts (for 2010-2019) of the health reform proposals introduced by Senators McCain and Obama. Our key findings are that the McCain proposal would reduce the number of uninsured from a projected number of 48.9 million people in 2010 by 21.1 million people if fully implemented in that year. The Obama plan would reduce the number of uninsured by 26.6 million people. The McCain proposal

would result in a net increase in federal spending (i.e., net of offsets) of $2.05 trillion over the 2010 through 2019 period compared with a net federal cost of $1.17 trillion under the Obama plan over this same ten-year period.

This is wrong. Do something...

I can honestly say, I am completely disgusted with McCain. I mean, where is the honesty here? Is he so desperate to allow this kind of behavior from his audiences? Worse, he is obviously feeling the heat if he is injecting hate and evilness into his VP's speeches. Are you kidding me?? I am FURIOUS about this it only solidified my "on the fence" friends who couldn't figure out which way to go. Now, they gooooBama.

Not to mention Ayers here. I believe he forgot his wifes father was involved with a domestic terrorist. This is exactly why the campaign stopped when the Obama campaign warned them. Obama is running a much cleaner campaign and with the hopes and prayers of the supporters out there, he will be inaugurated in January; and I will fly to Washington for that.

I wrote a long letter to McCain denouncing his appalling behaviors towards Obama. Where is the class? My parents, both registered republicans and conservative, did the same. Now, my mother has made the choice to switch her party to democrat; and she is conservative. I love it.

Race will never go away, but it can dwindle down with the voice of unity if we all move in that direction.

I still would like to know why people who are voting for McCain, are doing so and for what reasons?

And I would love to answer you. But in the process of doing so in numerous threads on this website, conservatives have been labeled racist, hate-filled, ignorant, selfish, uninformed religious wacko hayseeds. I'm not going to open myself up to any more abuse.

No one has put these labels on the conservatives- at least nothing that isn't being documented in case after case.

If you are not a racist, hate monger or any of those labels what have you done to speak against the incidiary remarks of McCain Palin campaign?

Silence is the same as acceptance. Do you not disagree with the inflammatory and dishonest statements being tossed about in an attempt to use hate as a weopon?

Or do you think it is ok as long as the conservative candidate wins?

This is the question that is burning in the minds of progressives these days. We understand (but disagree) with the conservative arguements but this issue is one we are having a hard time grasping.

Since when is muslim a bad word?

Why does islam =terror in the stump speeches

"That one", "does not think like us" , "kill him" "terrorist", N*** http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081011/ap_on_el_pr/mccain_angry_crowds

This is now the burning question that lingers. Haven't we moved past all of this and if so why aren't more republicans admonishing their members and candidataes for making race and religion an issue in this campaign?

Donna Brazile: Don't Ever Put Me In The Back Of The Bus"

I'm gonna say it and get it off my chest, because for the next thirty days, I'm gonna be the best Catholic woman ever....As a child who grew up in the segregated Deep South, we've come so far in this country....But I remember when I used to get on the bus: my mother would tell me, "Donna, when you get on the bus, you and your brothers go all the way to the back, and don't look at anybody." We have changed. This is a more tolerant, open, progressive society. And yet, we're having this conversation because [Obama] is biracial. He spent nine months in the womb of a white woman. He was raised...by his white grandparents...He got out of school and went to Harvard, and all of a sudden he's "uppity" and there's something wrong with him? What is wrong with us?...

I have to agree with RN Power OHIO. She has legitimate questions and I am curious too. I was raised in a very conservative house with a father who served in a republican office in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (hard to get much more conservative than that) Now, both of them are voting for Obama; still registered republican. (My mother just changed her party to democratic)

I have looked at McCain with an open mind, but cannot see the things most conservatives see. I understand how some people are very anti abortion and that is fine. However, I have some very good democratic friends who are anti abortion as well. When I look at the issues between the two candidates, from a humanitarian point of view, I see nothing in common with McCain.

The only thing I truly agree with McCain on are his immigration ideas. Not a big enough deal to move my vote.

I will check those out. But I have not heard anyone who is voting for Obama call names or blame the McCain supporters for being racist. I actually hear that from the McCain supporters. I read all areas of news; fox included. Also, I keep reading a lot of false reporting from fox which bothers me. If they would have taken the time to get the real story before assuming that ACORN was involved with voting fraud, then they wouldn't have to back peddle. Once you plant the seed, we all know it grows and grows and grows.

I have stopped posting on the political threads of this website because of the ubiquitous accusations of racism and hate. I am disgusted with the uncivil tone and unfounded accusations.

I will not engage in that dialog here either. I have referred the questioner to other posters who have not yet given up on the prospect of respectful and thoughtful dialog, and to a website that discusses conservative philosophies on the chance that s/he will find the answers s/he seeks.

For what it's worth, I am not a Republican. I am a conservative, which McCain is not. I don't like either candidate for President, and fear that our country will be headed down a troubled road regardless of who wins the Presidency.

Good night.

I am sorry that frank and open discussion has offended you. Frankly, there are many people offended in this nation and the only way to unify will be to go issue by issue and person by person. This is how attitudes are changed.

I do not believe that anyone called you any derogatory name personally. The accusations of racism and hate though not directed at you personally are unfortunately relevant in this thread as they have become relevant in the election. Not by my choosing.

The issue of racial and religious bias is also important to us as nurses. Remember the cross cultural implications of nursing care. We as caregivers must recognize our biases and work to eliminate unhealthy biases within our profession.

If you personally do not share the views of so many hateful Americans then I would suppose that we actually agree on this issue.
