Good morning. I was reading on cnn.com this morning about author Malcolm Gladwell's new book that discusses why some people become famous and why others just blend in the crowd. I was wondering... are there any nurses who became famous after being a nurse?? Like did any become noted advocates, influential public officials, or maybe even moviestars?? :thankya:This is a fun question and I am just curious if any nurses out there that you know of had a brush with fame.
:w00t:
When I was in newborn nursery yesterday, in clinicals, the charge nurse walked in and said "Hey, are you the guy I heard about the other day?"
(Someone had told her about me changing careers from a death row prison employee to (eventually) a pedi/neonate nurse)
Does that make me famous? :)
Becki Dilley, mother of America's first surviving sextuplets, is also a nurse. The drummer for the Bay City Rollers (don't recall his name right now) became a nurse after he left the band, but lost his license when he was convicted of a sex offense.
Slightly OT: David Lee Roth (yes, Van Halen's first lead singer) is a certified paramedic or EMT, don't remember which.
Derek Longmuir was the guy from Bay City Rollers. He pled guilty to downloading Mediaography later saying that he pled guilty to try to avoid a media frenzy. Plan didn't work. Frenzy ensued. He said (I think) that a lodger or someone else with access to his computer did it, but that he knew nobody would believe him so took the plea hoping it would go away quickly. Anyway, fired from job and license suspended. Sentenced to 300 hours community service, and review board gave him back his license. He still works as a psychiatric nurse.
In case you haven't guessed, I was a fan (a little bit) back in the days before I was even born of course:chuckle:chuckle:chuckle

I remembered that his first name was Derek but couldn't remember the last name and was too lazy to use Mr. Google. I liked their music but never embraced the Rollermania frenzy that my friends did.
BTW, IIRC this was in the very early days of the Internet.
Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who killed her 5 children, was an RN.Darva Conger, the bride on Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, was an RN.
Daniel Conahan, the mass-murderer known as the Hog Trail killer, was an LPN.
Genene Jones, a pediatric nurse who made babies and older non-verbal children code so she could resuscitate them and is believed to have killed dozens of children, was an LPN. "The Death Shift" is by far the better of the two books written about this case.
I had to google Ron Jeremy, lol.
He got mainstream fame in recent years by being on "The Surreal Life" with, among others, Tammy Faye Bakker Messner.
A woman I work with saw some footage of her funeral, and there was Ron Jeremy and Vanilla Ice, who was also on that program with her, sitting there with her family.
