Good luck to everyone!
OMG!I got my Littman Cardiology III in today.....it is soooooo worth the $$$!
I love it!
So much better than all my other stethoscopes!
I need to buy myself a new one - mine stands straight out sideways when you hold it upright the tuping is so stiff - and its so old that they no longer make the earpieces for it - they changed them.
If you can hear well enough, then it's fine. If nothing else, do your first semester with the one you have. If you like it, etc, then maybe you could purchase the Littmann for the 2nd semester. :)
I have a pink el cheapo, a burgundy el cheapo, and a purple mid-grade el cheapo with a clock on it...all would be fine, but I want that extra auditory boost.
My thoughts: If this Littmann lasts me 4 semesters, it's done its money's worth. I'm sure it will last longer than that, as my pink & purple ones are from over 10 years ago & both were stored in a hot / cold storage for several years. They both still work.
Even if it doesn't...I'd buy another one as soon as I possibly could!
I do have slight hearing loss (who doesn't right?), so I wanted the Littmann Cardiology III.
I have to add this in favor of the Littmann...(I'm not sure if all the Littmanns have this feature.)
If you lightly press on the bell, you can hear breathing sounds, if you press down a little harder, it seems to have a slight 'ear suction' that makes it easier to hear the heart beat and less outside noise.
(I don't know how to explain it any other way..without using technical terms. lol)
Sometimes Ebay does offer them cheaper that I got mine for, but I ordered my at AllHeart.com for $125.49. ...Not bad at all compared to some prices I have seen! I also got a free student offer to get a free student kit.
It comes with a Cardiac Auscultation (Heart Sounds) CD with normal & abnormal heart sounds, an extra set of soft-sealing eartips & an engravable ID tag for the stethoscope.
I had actually ordered a ID tag, so I already have one....that would will be a spare. lol It's cool, it looks like a saddle for the steth, and has the monogrammed-like "L" imprint.
The earpiece 'arms' are bent inward helping the sound to be more audible.
I just took these pics with my phone. :)

It's called a tuneable diaphragm hun, it supposed to do that. I think soft touches with it are just like using a steth, and pressing hard is like using the bell. I may be reversed, look on the manual it says for sure. :)

That's right.
(light skin contact/low frequencies/traditional bell mode)
(Pressed firmly on skin/high frequencies/traditional diaphragm mode)
....That's why I decided not to use technical terms. :chuckle
Tuneable diaphragm...used for listening to "low and high frequency sounds without removing and repositioning the chestpiece"...
Jaxia....another perk for the Littmann Cardiology III (along with some other steths) is that it has the adult and pedi sides. Some stethoscopes do not have both.
I have heard rumors that Methodist of Dallas is either doing the same thing or considering it, but I have not been able to confirm that.
Yes Methodist does have the program. When I was doing my internhsip in the OR at big Mehtodist, the OR nurse Educator (a great lady) was using it as recruiting tool for me and my clicinical pal. She went so far as to guarantee us a spot in the January class if we agreed to come work for Methodist and had all the prereqs. One of my clasmates went to work there, but I don't know if she joined the program.
Two of their surgical techs and one of the anesthesia techs had already filled out internal applications and were taking classes at EC that summer to finish up the last of the prereqs. It worked a lot like the THR program. Methodist paid for it and students did their clinicals at big Methodist with the nurse educators who had MSNs.
