No nursing shortage: roll call!

Nurses General Nursing

This is a follow-up to the "will the nursing shortage ever end?" post. If there's a glut of new grads and unemployed nurses in your area, post your location. I'll start: Bay Area/NorCal - no jobs here, kids!

I've worked LTC for 10 years, 7 as an LPN. There aren't any jobs for me in LTC. I've applied for every single job I am qualified for. At least for me it's not a matter of being too picky. Ay this point I'd be happy with anything!

Also I was looking at Craigslist just to see if anything was there and they had listings for CA which I know from reading here doesn't have enough jobs for people who live there. Why are they recruiting in NY?

What part of CA are they recruiting for? Rural?

Nursing shortage? I don't know. Shortage of nurses willing to take entry level jobs? I think so. I'm not sitting around for six months waiting for that Pie in the Sky as seen on TV job. I'm working a GREAT job (I love my demential pts), earning a GREAT (for here: I've got four of five bucks an hour on the two closest hospitals....) wage, building my skills and planning to look in a year. (and before you, general you, start on how LTC experience doesn't count, I've discussed it with management at my dreeeeeeam job. It does count.)

I guess in your area LTC experience counts. But after working as an LPN and trying to get into a hospital I was told that LTC experience doesn't count even if your work is in skilled nursing which for those of you who work LTC can be just as hard as any acute care hospital job. I know I personally am not waiting for my "dream" job and I'm willing to pay my dues as you say. LTC facilities are not a quick fix for experience either, a lot of them are not hiring any more than hospitals are. It depends on where you are at. Also, a lot of the facilities near me want ADON type which I know I am not ready for, nor I am ready to be a charge nurse of any kind right now. Right now I am researching part-time flu clinics since it's almost that time of year again. It's not my "Dream" job by any means, but better than nothing even if it is temporary.

Please tell us where these "several" RNs found hospital jobs in Hawaii ... or in NC. Share the wealth.

I said listings in Hawaii at the hospitals, but what sense does it make to have actively listed jobs (mostly posted within the last 30 days) and be on a hiring freeze? Logically one would think they wouldn't post jobs if they weren't going to hire for them. Anyway, google castle medical center and there was probably 10 positions under RN, there were a bunch of different ones under the pali momi site, but they also listed jobs by specialty and by their sister hospitals. I'm not saying they are dying for nurses out here, but just trying to say there are listings for jobs, unlike under the federal hiring website, there were no postings for jobs for RNs, well maybe there was one for Tripler but I cannot remember.

https://www.healthcaresource.com/castle/index.cfm?&ijobpostondaysold=&template=dsp_job_list.cfm&cjobattr1=All&ijobrowstart=1&fuseaction=search.jobList&ijobcatid=104 there are 10 postings at castle under RN, scroll down lines 22-32. Hawaii Pacific health system jobs lists them by specialty. you have to search many different ones. Since you have 15 years of experience, you could probably find one easily.

Are you planning a move to NC? I have had friends hired at Onslow Memorial hospital, camp lejeune naval hospital (who will always accept resumes), New hanover regional medical center, pitt county's hospital, pender memorial hospital... Maybe they knew someone, perhaps their school helped with job placement, none the less they are working.

Excuse me for having hope, aka the "student mentality"

Very often a facility is required to publicize vacant positions. That doesn't mean the facility intends to fill them. Or, those positions might already be filled, but they are publicizing them anyway per policy.

I spoke very frankly with the ER manager at a suburban Chicago hospital. We spent a LONG time together. We had the formal interview and then I was like "Look. Let's talk." I could do that because she knows my sister.. She said that, no, it's not ACUTE care experience, but it is nursing experience. BE VERY clear on your resume about what skills and tasks and responsibilities you've performed and learned. Once you write a great resume (what you have to offer, not what you wish to get from them, and it's easy to bleed over) and get an interview, she said ACKNOWLEDGE in your interview that you know that you bust your butt in LTC, but it's a different "pace." Those were HER words. She also told me, remember ER nurse manager, suburban Chicago Catholic hospital....they GET psych and gang bangers.... "I just hired a nursing home nurse. She runs CIRCLES around us."

And, of course, I acknowledge that EVERYTHING is regional, which is why I posted where I am.

As far as your flu clinic experience, think really hard about how to resume what you've learned and experienced and what that experience offers to anyone that may consider hiring you.

If jobs in CA are listed on Craig's list they are probably not for hospital jobs. Most likely dialysis or people looking for home health. Southern California for sure is tough for new grads right now. If there are schools nearby, count on a glut of new grads.

Portland Or/Vancouver Wa. Glut of new grads. Glut of experienced nurses even, competition is tough. Very few, but some, new grad positions thru either Versant or a similar type of position, but overall still slow, with clearing on the horizon.

Too bad because I think that would be a heavenly place to live!

I suspect in another 3 to 5 years we will be back at active Hospital recruiting.

Ditto to this,

I applied to Legacy's Versant new grad program....I was one of 750. Legacy is the only system to offer new grad programs out of 4 large Hospital systems and a few county hospitals

There are 7 RN programs in the Portland/Vancouver area and a bunch of for profit trade schools for LPN programs.

Took me 8 months to find a job in a SNF

Columbus, ga .... Hiring new grads and desperately need them as well as experienced RNs! Many ICU positions open currently, hiring new grads straight into icu as well

Doesn't make sense to me either, but that's what they do!! Maybe an HR person can explain the logic behind it, but anyway I don't think it is my mission to rain on anybody's parade. No matter what we are talking about all we can say is that these are trends we are seeing and I do not want to read any more posts from people who feel they have a bright shiny new RN license and feel they were sold a bill of goods about the job market. Of course some new grads will be hired and probably in some of the cities we mention as over-saturated.

Nobody knows what things will look like in 5 years. As recently as a year ago the people considered authorities on the subject were still stubbornly insisting that everything was wonderful and in the year 2012 we will have a vacancy rate of over 20%!! At present the job market is tight for nurses of all levels of experience in Los Angeles. If someone wants to tell me I am wrong because they just got a job as a new grad in Los Angeles - I'm happy for you but that will not change my opinion of the overall picture.
