No nursing shortage: roll call!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

This is a follow-up to the "will the nursing shortage ever end?" post. If there's a glut of new grads and unemployed nurses in your area, post your location. I'll start: Bay Area/NorCal - no jobs here, kids!

Northern CA, Mendocino County - nada, nothing unless you want LTC where they kill your spirit (loved the pts tho).

I am a new grad and this thread makes me feel great. :uhoh3::uhoh3:

Specializes in Hospice / Psych / RNAC.
The island of Oahu, HI. I'm in nursing school and I checked local hospitals for positions last night, every hospital here is hiring. Also Jacksonville, NC and surrounding area hospitals are hiring as well.

I've lived in Hawaii for 45 years ... they said the same thing in the 80's about nurses retiring, shortage, etc... the over saturation is constant. My friends who work at Queen's say there is a hiring freeze and Kaiser always has a large amount of posting but no one ever gets hired. It's dim over here with every island shooting out multiple nurses both ADN and BSN and then you got the military spouses, the foriegn nurses from PI, older nurses from the mainland wanting to come and retire in Hawaii and work, local nurses ... it's a mess. I'm not saying there aren't any jobs if you have 15 years of experience; sure ... but do you? Frankly that would apply to any area.

Before you start ringing the "all come on bell" you should do your research. The statement that every hospital here is hiring couldn't be farther from the truth. The oversaturation of RNs remains extreme.

Queen's and Kuakini: practically every ward clerk, CNA/NA, and tech has a BSN/ADN. Kaiser: they tend to hire internally or by recommendation.

miami fl RN very few for experienced

and i think none for no experience

Specializes in Cardiac Nursing.

North Central KY, oversaturated with nursing programs and experienced nurses are having a hard time. Plenty of job postings, I just don't think they are actually hiring. I had one hospital system tell me flat out that they are not hiring ANY external new grads for the forseable future. But as I can't afford to move my family anywhere but here, I'm stuck. I have a few nibbles out that I hope turn into interviews, I'm willing to commute the 90 miles one way.

Specializes in Critical Care.

Suburbs of NYC, between Westchester and the Capitol region - Most hospitals had no new grad programs this year. Experienced RNs have an easy time finding jobs.

NYC is slowing turning to a BSN only environment.

I would love to nurse in Hawaii!

Buffalo, NY here. There are a few jobs but it's almost impossible to get a job as a new grad unless you know someone. I've been applying for jobs since January with no luck.

Perhaps I should have said every hospital out here had listings, not necessarily hiring. Eastern NC and surrounding areas are hiring though, have had several friends that just graduated and found jobs easily. Also that link is from Oct 2010, it says it at the top.

I graduated May 20. I tested June 24. I started my job July 18. I was asked to apply and got to name my own hours.

I think part of the problem is that we've heard for so long that there's a nursing shortage, that folks think they get to roll right in to their dream job in L&D or ER or NICU. As far as I know, that's never been the case. My sister earned her RN in 1997 and started out on a med/surg unit making low wages and driving a long way. She was salutatorian in her class. 15 years later, she has 13 years in on her DREAM L&D unit at a great hospital with amazing wages and great benefits.

We hear "nursing shortage" and eschew those pay your dues jobs. I'm working in LTC. Was invited to be there (though I love it more than I'd ever imagined). I'm earning a base of $22 an hour. I live in the midwest. FTR, my 1100 sq foot house cost 66k plus 15k in remodelling. My mortgage, in total including escrow, is under $700. So these are decent wages. You have to pay your dues! There was NEVER a time when EVERYONE got their best job ever right out of school. There are a few in my class that did. However, they are working further away for less money. (Hospitals in NC IL pay LESS than LTC).

Nursing shortage? I don't know. Shortage of nurses willing to take entry level jobs? I think so. I'm not sitting around for six months waiting for that Pie in the Sky as seen on TV job. I'm working a GREAT job (I love my demential pts), earning a GREAT (for here: I've got four of five bucks an hour on the two closest hospitals....) wage, building my skills and planning to look in a year. (and before you, general you, start on how LTC experience doesn't count, I've discussed it with management at my dreeeeeeam job. It does count.)

That seems to be the same situation here, you have to work your foot in the door somehow... It is rather expensive to live out here, much much more than buffalo NY. Although hospitals have multiple listings for vacancies, it seems may be too many nurses around. I'm sure it will take a few years before the bottom falls out, good thing I still have 3 years of school left :uhoh3:

Please tell us where these "several" RNs found hospital jobs in Hawaii ... or in NC. Share the wealth.
