No HS diploma or GED, but is a CNA?

Published

In your state, is it a requirement to have a HS diploma or GED to enter CNA courses??

Specializes in Critical Care.

No, not in WA state to my knowledge, esp. if it is a private program (e.g. paid for by you and not a part of a Community College). I can't remember ever hearing that having a GED/diploma was a caveat to acceptance to any CNA program in WA state. The interesting thing is that if you want into an RN program, in WA state, you almost always have to have CNA. Go figure lol

Specializes in Gerontology, nursing education.

No. CNA courses are often open to high school students who work in facilities during the summer as well as during the school year.

not too sure about FL, but i know it wasn't a requirement in NY

In the state of Florida a person only needs a GED/HS diploma if they are challenging the exam without completing a training program.

I know folks here in California who dont have HS/GED and are CNAs

Specializes in Med/surg, rural CCU.

No, in MN we have alot of CNA's who are still in HS.

Specializes in Nursing Assistant.

In Arizona you do not need a GED or HS Diploma to go through a CNA program and get licensed.

Specializes in Critical Care.

As far as I know, you don't need it to be a CNA in North Carolina.

Specializes in Nursing Education, CVICU, Float Pool.

To be in a state approved course at a CC in NC you must have a one or the other, or at least at the CC's around here. I did my CNA course in my last year of HS this past year, but I then again I didn't test for my CNA certification until after I graduated and had my diploma so I guess it can vary.

Specializes in Tele, OB, public health.

The only requirement I have heard of is in MN ( at the red cross at least where I took my CNA course) you had to prove proficiency in English by either 1. Faxing a college transcript 2. TOEFL results or 3. taking a test from them

Specializes in Telemetry RN.

Not in Indiana. I took a CNA course the summer I turned 17 and worked LTC through my senior year of high school.
