No HS diploma or GED, but is a CNA?

In your state, is it a requirement to have a HS diploma or GED to enter CNA courses??

Where I work, we have many CNAs that graduated high school and cannot read/write. I don't think having a diploma/GED should be required to be a CNA, but instead i think a basic reading/writing/math proficiency test should be given by the NH before employment. We not only have some employees that cannot write witness statements for incident reports because they cannot write, but we have CNAs that do not speak english. If our charge nurse does not speak spanish we have to find someone to translate between the nurse and CNA. I was told by management that it would be discriminatory to refuse to hire someone because they did not speak english. I asked her if my husband would be able to work here and only speak his native language of french...

Now there's an idea I fully support!

If they were so smart, why drop out of high school?
Interesting viewpoint.

Two of the smartest people I know are high-school drop-outs without a GED or college diploma. One of 'em, you'd never, ever guess it by talking to her because she's one of the most well-read and well-educated people out there... just not spoon-fed by the educational system.

When I graduated high school 3 yrs ago, I saw plenty of people walk across the stage who could barely put three words together...

I think that a HS diploma isnt necessary to be a CNA. All I ask is that they can read & write on an 8th grade level..I think that's pretty sufficient.
