  1. Congrats to everyone that got hired at Washington. :yeah:Good Luck
  2. So funny, I just had a PPD done and for the first time it was raised, red, itchy and funky looking a couple of hours after having it done. I was ready to freak out too ( starting a new job today and didnt need the delay) the next day it was gone. Seems Im sensitive to it now. After having it done every year ( sometimes twice) for the past 10 years.
  3. Well I was working and going to nursing school full time 3 weeks after having my baby. My pumping never got in the way of me doing my job or class. I always used my breaks and lunches to pump. The only time I couldnt pump is when we were off site and I didnt drive my car. Like others said your breast will adjust to your schedule. On a 12 hour day on the unit I would take my two breaks ( 20 minutes) and hour lunch. I would pump, eat, read or watch tv at the same time (they have special bras just for pumping great for multi tasking). Sorry that Mulan had a bad experience with a co-worker and breastfeeding. Everyone I have worked with or others who have pumped didnt take more than 20-25 minutes to pump and get back to work especially if its busy.
  4. I worked as a community health educator before going into nursing. Now I have my PHN and I am a L&D nurse. I would have to say that the reason I wanted to go into nursing was because I wanted to provide patients and clients with all the correct and accurate information to make informed decision in regards of their health care. I have my own personal beliefs and I would never place them on others. Nurses have to be objective yet caring to patients and their needs and denying their rights to information is an ethical violation. Sure in a perfect world we could all get out of having uncomfortable conversations with patients about health care dilemmas but if nurses want to continue to learn and grow then you must engage in those conversations. Honesty I dont see how you could be a public health nurse and not give out information about all aspects of reproductive services.
  5. Dont worry. Many people are carriers which means that if you become immune compromised then you may get sick with active TB. Most people get it from their home country where its prevalent, prior BCG vaccination or from family members they spent a lot of close contact with. Some folks are just more likely to get sick than others. You can start nursing school with no problem just make sure you keep your x-ray because hospitals will ask for it prior to starting. There are 2-3 meds you take for about 9 months just to ensure you dont get active disease. Lots of healthy folks take it and dont have problems. Dont worry if you are a carrier it just means that you dont have to take the PPD ( TB skin) test every year because it will always come up positive. I worked with a TB public health nurse for few weeks and she was also a carrier no big deal. Good Luck with nursing school
  6. :yeah:Congrats on passing and Good Luck on your interview.
  7. I had a group interview with 5 other people. They stated that they were interviewing 90 in the first round and about 45 in the second. They will be hiring 20 people total. I was asked for the 2nd interview but declined. The program is set to start in September. Good Luck everybody
  8. :yeah:Thanks so much for this. Im a nurse tech now soon to be working RN and Im so grateful for the expereince of helping out the nurses and learning so much from the CNA's too. I wish that all nurses would have worked as CNA's or tech before going out on the floor. Im so happy when nurses thank me for my hard work. Its good to feel appreciated. I have some nurses light up when I walk in and ask me if im working today ( I work on various units) because they could use my help. Im going to miss being a tech and I will make sure to appreciate all of my TEAM-MEMBERS. :redpinkhe
  9. You never know. I did 265 questions about 5 hours and passed. Good Luck
  10. I am currently finishing my EL-MSN program this year. I had my baby in the middle of the program. I do have the hubby's help but I went to school with a few single parents. My mom and MIL help a ton. My mom used her vacation time to watch her while I was in clinicals (three weeks after she was born) We have her in daycare a couple of times a week and the moms watch her the other times. I am working but I have taken out loans and have a few small schloarships that help out with costs. If you wont be making a lot of money you can see if you qualify for subsized childcare so that your parents wont have to watch your child all the time. My mom drops off and picks up my kid on my long 12 hr days sometimes ( my friend hired someone specifically just to do this) Days were really never a problem in terms of childcare and nights/evening shifts can be tricky. One trick is to have study groups at your house while your child is sleep so that you dont need a babysitter and still get good study time in. Make friends because they can take notes and turn in assignments for you when you cant make it and vise versa. Good Luck. You can do it. I know so many who have done it as single parents with multiple kids.
  11. I have oatmeal in the morning lots of fiber and holds me for hours. They make high fiber oatmeal bars that I like better than the powerbars. Yogurt with fruit for snacks. Sandwich for lunch if I cant get away. Cheese sticks and almonds for quick snacks.
  12. I am an assistant on a Med-Surg unit and I watch the nursing students interact with the nurses. There are some who dont want to have anything to do with med-surg and literally turn their nose up to the patients and their care ( we have a mostly homeless population). They want to go to Peds, or L&D. I myself got lucky in getting a new grad RN job but I was so ready to take on med-surg. I love my job, the nurses and the patients. You never know what the future holds for you and you cant piegon hole yourself into one unit. Plus with that kind of attitude dont expect to get a good recommendation or a possible job offer once you go job hunting. Appreciate all your experiences.
  13. I really depends on your experience and the unit. My boss said that he could hire me per diem night( temporary) with some training involved. Its a med-surg unit where I have been working as a nurse tech and the nurses have been unofficially training me to move up to a RN position.
  14. I know folks here in California who dont have HS/GED and are CNAs
  15. I just had an interview with Washington. They are having first round interviews this week which was about 90 out of 700 applicants. They are looking for BSN or higher since they are going for magnet. The 2nd round will be in 2 weeks.
