No autopsies allowed for covid positive deaths?

I went to the funeral of a former coworker who died, and was covid positive. This person was in their 20s. I learned that the family had requested an autopsy that had been denied by the coroner. This was because the patient was covid positive. The family wanted to understand what contributed to this sudden death, the patient had been recovering at home and had sudden exasperation of respiratory issues, and had a cardiac arrest during the transfer.

So, I can see a thriller movie in the future about someone who murders their significant other, who happens to be covid positive and recovering at home.

We had a patient that was going home with home hospice. The CM agreed to send the patient home by car with the family. The patient died in route ....something like Vacation with Chevy Chase. The family was terribly upset and the procedures were changed to an ambulance transfer with patients going home on home hospice.

A COVID diagnosis in no way contraindicates an autopsy. Our pathology department does them all the time.

This is a bs post

stop with the conspiracy theories; we are tired

If there is any truth to this, the family could’ve paid for an autopsy or found another Dr to do it

I have a friend who went through same thing though he wasn't covid - the medical examiner said they were too busy (CA) and advised the family they could pay for their own autopsy but would have to be out of their county.   The gentleman who passed was only 36 yrs old, post op hernia repair - the mother is devastated.

It took me a long time to get your drift. Yes, there could be some really great thriller plots...ala Hitchcock along these lines.

Personally I don't really care whether you believe it or not; how about I send you his mother's phone number and you can get the whole story.

Pretty common for lay people to misunderstand what they are told by medical professionals.  When a doc walks out of a room, I often ask the patient and family to explain to me what they understand. If it is complex, or they are under duress, they rarely get it right. Then I work with them until they can actually explain the situation.

But- context is everything.  Until this post, I did not know that the autopsy thing was part of the mis/disinformation being spread.  But, I did my own research into the matter.  (using the current definition of research=2 minute Google search).

Snopes and AP both explain here why so many gullible folks bought into this.  Of course the CDC does not prohibit this.

So- given that there are millions being duped, no surprise that there are family members reporting this as fact.

And, the OP was not trying to add to the confusion with "No autopsies allowed for covid positive deaths?".  Just musing about a potential plot for a mystery.  Surprised the OP didn't go with "Of course autopsies are allowed for covid positive deaths" to avoid adding any fuel to the bonfire of bad information out there.

I'm so tired.  My mother sends me messages like this too. "I heard from this lady at church that her neighbor's sister had Covid but then she died in a car wreck and the hospital said she died of Covid."

My mother sends these messages with a *Shrug!* "isn't life weird!" attempt at deniability (or "LOL somebody should write a crime novel amirite??"), but nobody is being fooled.  She is re-circulating urban legends that say that the CDC has completely invented and/or exaggerated and/or intentionally designed the Covid pandemic for some political purpose.

I'm sorry if that wasn't the message you were trying to send in your first post, but.... I sort of think it probably was.
