Night Shift Snack

Published

Hey all!

Just at work on nights right now, and was wondering what are your favourite night shift snakcs!

Specializes in ED.

Whatever I can get my hands on. Breaks are rare now for us. I drink a lot of water and diet coke.

Enough water to get me to the finish line, but not a sip more than I need to get there because I want uninterrupted sleep after I cross the finish line.

Wouldn't want to soil your brief.

Eat fruits and drink plenty of water. :)

WATER and I snacked on granola cereal.

I also am a diet Pepsi addict.

I make sure to eat a MEAL in the middle of my shift, not a snack. I eat dinner at home before I go to work, lunch about 2 AM -- usually leftovers from a dinner earlier in the week. And breakfast when I get home.

I bring microwave soups. The Campell's chunky ones are not the most healthy, but they can usually get me through a shift because they are filling. The Kickin' Buffalo-Style Chicken, Hearty Cheeseburger, and Grilled Chicken and Sausage Gumbo are my favorites.

I wish I could drink more water - I always forget to bring bottled water and the hospital water tastes awful without ice in it, but it's so cold on my floor that I am literally shivering at least part of every shift no matter how many thermostats I adjust, so anything colder than room temp is a no go just because I will shiver even harder. I make myself cups of hot tea or coffee if I am going to drink anything just so it will be warm. I can't do anything that has to be refrigerated and not reheated for the same reason as the no ice water, so any cold snacks like fruit out of the fridge, cottage cheese, carrots, yogurt, etc. I am not trying to make myself miserable!

Everyone on my floor orders a lot so I give into temptation a lot too - Jimmy John's, Dominos, Papa John's, local Chinese places...

If you're the person who keeps turning the thermostat up to 80, shame on you! You can always put on more clothes if you're cold, but there's a limit to what I can take off!

Snacks? What are those? I eat whole meals on night shift!

Fortunately, with my job, I can sit down and eat a meal with few interruptions...I know not everyone is as lucky.

Cup of coffee w/ fruit snacks and some mini-muffins after my first round of assessments. I'll then eat lunch around 2am with a cherry coke and then have a granola bar real quick near the end of my shift.

Lately I've been bringing an apple, avocado, and banana for each shift, and cocoa covered almonds for snacks, and of course at least a liter of water. Being tired makes you crave all the junk food coworkers and patients bring in like doughnuts and cookies but too many of those leave you feeling sluggish and just all around bad. You may crave the sweet stuff, but choose the healthier, lighter things and both your mind and body will thank you by the end of the shift.
