News Flash Everybody Farts!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have read a couple of posts lately where people are complaining about people farting breaking wind, passing gas etc...

What exactly is the big deal? The average person farts 14 to 20 times a day and if you say you don't fart you're either lying or you are an alien species.

Yes it can be gross and smell bad but it's like poop it just happens sometimes.

I don't have a gallbladder. I used to eat a lot of salad from the salad bar in the cafeteria at night. For some reason, it started causing me pretty epic GI upset. It culminated in an event where I was in a patient room, had sudden severe cramps, and needed the bathroom urgently.

Not sure if it was e. coli or just too much fiber, but I ended up having to do "the walk" all the way to the other end of the unit. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PwJoHsSHFb8/VfB1x6y8UAI/AAAAAAAAFNI/sNfU83cImrA/s1600/Penguin.%2BWalk.%2BWaddle.%2BSlip.gif

I *hate* to poop at work. I do just about anything not to have that happen.

I have many, many poop-shy kids at my job (school nurse). The complain of terrible stomachaches that a good fart or poop would help, but they refuse, even after being offered use of my private restroom.

Like I've said in another thread, we can encourage folks to fart or poop all the time, but to do ourselves in any space where another human being might be? Nope, that can't be and is embarrassing, not natural in any way. :sarcastic:

My son was away at camp and he did not poop for like 4 days. Predictably, he developed severe stomach cramps. He told the counselors he wanted to come home and was in tears. My friend was camp nurse. She had her own cabin. She offered to let my son use her restroom and after a couple of hours, he pooped his merry way out of his "homesickness". He was fine after that.

(I was actually referring to pooping out in the open, in front of other people (like, at the nurses' station), not just using a restroom away from home ...)

Ah yes...this reminds me of the stellar coworkers who will poop in the little bathroom at the nurses station to avoid walking a few yards to the multi stall employee bathroom down the hall.

Don't you just hate it when you're in the grocery store and walk into a wall of stink left by some other shopper?

So....just wondering....with all the incontinence...how does anyone know it is a coworker fumigating the hallway and not just a smoker drifting out of a patient room?

I do think it's strange for someone to complain about gas. I have walked into the nurses station to walk into a cloud of odor. I just laughed with the other nurse.

As far as being unable to control flatulence, I kind of have that problem. Last year, I developed IBS. I couldn't hold gas or my bowels.

To be courteous to my co workers, I brought my own air freshener to work, which I'm sure broke some kind of rule.

PS I also did walk all the way to the furthest restroom to use the facilities in these instances. I'd let the other nurse know I'd be off unit for a little while before leaving.
