im excited to watch-it will be nice to see a good show about nurses.
love, rose
I was not as impressed with the second installment of this series.
Not that the nurses weren't awesome, but we must get away from the image that the RN role is that of being the nuturer of our patients. I don't work in pedi or with infants, but the first nurse in the story must have skills other than simply "mothering" her patients.
Have I been conditioned by all of the other reality type shows about hospitals to expect the dramatic with this nursing series? I guess I want this show to demonstrate the RNs real role in the care of critically ill patients (infant or adult). It can be very stressful, fastpaced, and requiring an extremely high level of knowledge and expertise. Let's see a nurse run a code. This is what is going to "sell" nursing to unknowing.
I confess that it's really hard for me sometimes to explain to others what it is I do exactly in my cardiothoracic ICU. I can barely believe what I do myself. And I'm positive that the NICU nurse on the show last night does more than comfort the parents of an infant facing heart surgery. But that was all that was portrayed.
I wonder if they're going to show how a med/surg RN handles an already busy assignment as she/he gets slammed with admissions? Yea, right.
A bit disappointing.

I agree. I only watched the first half of the show because I found my interest waning. I bet the peds nurse is great at her job, but we didn't really get to see much of what she does.
Another thing that irked me...each time they introduced a new nurse they'd flash up their name and underneath they have the title "nurse". How about some credentials? LPN? RN? BSN? CNS? Did anyone else feel a bit slighted by this? On other shows they point out who's a resident, what year, med students, etc. But we're all "nurses"? Come on. I'm working hard to add the initials RN to my signature!
I don't have the Discovery Health Channel, only Discovery Channel and that series is only available on "Health" channel. If I had a dish, I was told I would be able to watch it and unfortunately, I don't. Would someone be willing to share their taped VHS? Please advise or p.m. me.
Thanks,
Sarah

i wish shows like oprah (that have had topics such as medical mistakes) would follow a busy med-surg nurse on a day-from-hell. i think the public needs to be educated

I was thrilled to have seen the second installment. Was over friends house when it was on and got to see it. Did not see the first or the third. Has anyone posted anything on the third? Anyway I expected to see more skills just like the poster in the quotes. I spend about 10 percent of my time talking to people and 90 percent carrying out very technical proceedures. These nurses seemed to have a lot of time to chat. I was interested in hearing what the intake surgical nurse said about how she burned out in pediatric ICU. How she became hysterical after second death on one shift and was distressed that the physician had to spend time comforting her instead of the family.
Okay having watched all three episodes of the Nursing Diaries, I say that the first episode was the best. Episode 2 had me channel surfing by 1030. Episode 3 was much better than episode 2, I think that they really portrayed life in an OR and PACU quite well. I thought last night was really up Marie_LPN's alley:chuckle .

Have to say, I enjoyed it. Will watch the next installment next week. Thanks for letting us know this program was there; I would not have , otherwise. About dang time nurses were at the forefront in the hospital/healthcare arena.
