New RN job... NO orientation!!!

Published

Good evening! I am starting a new RN job in an urgent care next week. I was informed tonight that I will not be getting ANY orientation. NADA. Is this typical with urgent care centers?? I know in the hospital, you get a few weeks. I was not expecting that as I know it's not as demanding or crazy as a hospital, but ggggeeeezzzzz, I thought I would get something.... NOPE.

Is this typical? What would you do???

PS- I have gone in on my own a few times to get some training under my belt. I have gone in after I got off from my other job, BUT was under the assumption (as was told) that I would get some official orientation, training when I actually started.... no.... oh boy. :o

When I worked retail I got a few days of training. I can not imagine starting a nursing job without any training. It just does not sound safe.

Good grief! You need a little bit of orientation--a couple of shifts, I would think--to learn where everything is, to get used to their paperwork, to just learn their routine. You get an orientation at Mickey D.'s, for pity's sake, and that's just handling burgers. How will it look to patients if you don't have a clue what to do when they come in?

Would you like some fries with that?

LOL!!! That is SO FUNNY rn/writer!!! :lol2: I know. One gets orientation bascially everywhere. It's ridiculous. The manager told me tonight that the few hours I came in here and there after work was my orientation. Give me a break. I am a fairly new RN as well. Well, I have nothing else to go to at this point. Wish me luck everyone!

What was this "I have gone in on my own" bit?

Did you just show up? Were you asked/scheduled to come in?

It's not at all the norm, but if I were an urgent care manager with a particularly stingy budget and a new hire was "showing up" unannounced, unscheduled, prior to the agreed upon start date ... I might either rescind the job offer, or "use" that as orientation time.

This is crazy. No orientation? Red flag if you ask me.

Yeah was it their idea or your idea to come in those times? And did you get paid for your time???

She asked me to come in a few times before the actual start date to get some extra training in. I came in as I had time. I was working my other job and had to give my notice. I could not just quit. She did not call me to set up the times, I just called as I had time once I got off from the other job. I am guessing she was considering this my 'orientation' time now that I look back. I did speak with her at one point, and told her I was going to need a few weeks orientation once I got going and I was told that was fine. I told her last night I had no idea that the training here and there was my 'orientation'. I told her that once I officially started, I thought I was going to get my orientation for at least a few weeks. Ugh. :uhoh3:

That's terrible! I can't imagine being a new RN and not getting any orientation. If you came in a couple of times for "training" before I'm pretty sure they should have paid you. Can you talk to the manager and see if they can atleast get another staff member to do a preceptorship with you even for a few weeks?

The OP has been an RN for two years. However, I surely agree that she needs orientation.

Wow - not a good sign for management style....... Oh well, do your best and you will do fine. Anything you do not know how to do then make someone show you. Just that simple.
