Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
I got expierence already but not a years worth i say around 6 months of community nursing under my belt...but thats that..did you friend go thru paul's ansc or he did it by himself ? You decided on your options already ?
lighten up, pal! aelith's right, there are options ahead of us. besides, you already have some extent of experience on your 'folio so perhaps that could also work to your advantage. goodluck and have faith!

As far as I know, he did it on his own.
Yes I have decided, I'm going to study.
hi kit25, i had to attend to some personal stuff so i had to temporarily stop doing my modules. If anyone feels that she couldn't finish the module on time, it is important to contact your lecturer and inform him/her. Because each module ideally should be finished in 12 weeks. Each module has 2 assignments so you're given 6 weeks to submit 1 assignment. But you can submit an assignment as early or as soon as you finish. I finished 1 module in 1 month, but i worked on it everyday. The assignment can be compared to a research paper because you have to discuss certain topics and to be able to support your arguments you must cite references. You'll really need to read about the subject matter and consult books, journals, news articles, websites to better discuss the topic. The visa that will be issued when you go on a clinical placement is a tourist visa only but you'll have to do a medical that is required for a business visa since you'll be working on a medical facility. Processing for a tourist visa only takes 2 weeks provided that you've given them complete and correct docs. What i did was go on a medical first then apply for the visa. I went for my medical friday (oct. 17) then went to via center on monday (oct.20) then i received my visa (oct.30)
can i ask for help. I was accepted for a pre registration course 3 months in melbourne in mt.alexander hospital. My commencement is feb 16 2009. Now i am to apply for an appropriate visa. When i went to via centre (jan 5), since my course in a hospital is just 3 months- they said i can apply for a business short stay visa. I finished my medical today at nationwide (jan 5). Problem is- since my course is exactly 3 months, once i step in aussie my time is running, isnt there any allowance for that visa? Can i extend my visa while im there? Can i convert that eventually to working visa? Or must i go home after the expiration?- going home would entail more expenses and then a new set of application must be lodged again? If i were to opt for an occupational trainee visa-how long would the processing take? Do you think i could make it just before feb 16 commencement? - considering that im done with my medical already. Thank you very much. I would higly appreciate your help towards helping me get the most apporporate visa. Business short stay 456 seems fast since its just 5 woking days plus 3 weeks medical- except for the fact that it is exactly 3 months, im not sure if i can extend, renew, do i have to go home immediately after or can i convert it. I dont even know what would be the date of my arrival since that would also consume my 90 days which is supposed to be exactly alotted for my course.
Well I would understand why you applied for a tourist visa because you went on your own. There a so called short stay visa or 456 wherein you can take the bridging course and after find an employer who will petition you, can convert your visa to 457 while in australia without going back to the Philippines. Anyway, you do have return tickets for both visas so it would be great to at least take a vacation while waiting for the authority to work. Here's the link for the visa update:http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/business/456/#a
I already have my results coming from Sarah and I failed 2 modules: Professional and the Legal/Ethical. I passed the cultural and Clinical so I only have to do part B for a day. This is quite expensive. Did you have any difficulty with the modules? I am planning to enroll both at the same time. I work as a telehealth nurse in the Philippines and sometimes, I have idle time to spare. Thanks for the information.

HELLO! I AM IN THE PROCESS OF APPLYING MY 456 BUSINESS SHORT STAY. MY CONCERN IS THAT MY COURSE IS EXACTLY 3 MONTHS STARTING FEB 16. WHEN SHOULD I BE THERE, IF I GO EARLIER, IM CONSUMING SOME DAYS OFF OF MY COURSE. CAN I APPLY FOR AN EXTENSION? WITH A 456 VISA, MUST I GO HOME AFTER THE EXPIRATION? OR CAN I HAVE IT CONVERTED? SINCE MY COURSE IS 3 MONTHS, YOU SAID I CAN BE GRANTED A BUSINESS LONG STAY? -WHY NOT A WORKING? AFTER FINISHING MY COURSE, AM I AUTOMATICALLY REGISTERED IN VIC? OR DO I HAVE TO APPLY AGAIN TO NBV? IM SORRY IM LOST. PLS PM ME. THANK YOU:yeah:

457 visa is that you cannot work for another sponsor until you have been granted a new visa that allows you to work
for them. if you work for an employer that is not your current sponsor, you risk having your visa cancelled and the
employer may face prosecution under the employer sanctions legislation. people convicted of offences under the
employer sanctions legislation face fines of up to $13 200 and two years’ imprisonment, while companies face fines of
up to $66 000 per illegal worker."

i came across an article that nurses in aus are allowed to work for 38 (or is it 40?) hours a week. would anyone know the usual shiftings on the floor? say one works 8-hour shifts for 5 days, or 3 12-hour shifts in a week, i was just wondering what can be done to spend the rest of the time productively? the provision above states a 457 visa holder can only work for the employer who sponsored him/her. does this mean you'll only be having one job throughout the rest of your stay there? i haven't exactly looked into the cost of living, but what if your earnings aren't enough? or perhaps you want to earn/save (or spend!:chuckle) more? are there any options?
and just checking, if i'm not interested in living permanently in aus, i don't have to go through the point system, right? just take the exam, be registered, find an employer, be sponsored, apply for the 457, and start working there, yes? *the "just" absolutely does not connote the ease of the process but merely the completeness of the general steps mentioned, hehe :wink2:* if i missed out anything, please let me know!
again, many thanks to your responses!
VICTORIAN: you have a legitimate problem, that's for others who will undergo 3 months training must take consider getting student visa, however, your visitors visa can be extended, the thing is you have to do such processing in australia prior the expiry of your existing visa.. after finishing your training, wait for the result if you pass or not, if you do, then wait for your license.. if you're visa is not yet expired you may stay in australia in order to find a job, but remember that working visa processing is @ 2-3 months, if you have money to stay in australia then fine, otherwise better go home and wait for your visa in order to save on living expenses, it still cheaper to go home and back again to oz than staying 3 months in OZ, try to compute and you will notice the big difference of savings if you go home.. good luck..
LUNA: your concerns/questions are correct.. you got it right, thats how 457 works as you mentioned above.. strictly, you cannot work with another employer as you mentioned above.. thats the reality.. if you are single, nurse's salary is sufficient.. no probs..
So you mean if I have a contract of 2 years, I would only be allowed to work 38-40hours a week for 2 years if I am on 457 visa? Awww...
I have a question about IELTS. I saw New Zealand's policy with regards to IELTS wherein if you were not able to meet the 7 in all bands in IELTS you can take IELTS again and you can concentrate on the componenet where you failed. I have read somewhere that this is also possible in Australia. Is this true? Thanks!

what you read was right. the normal basic hours in australia even in other jobs is 38 hours a week. any hours worked beyond that number is considered overtime.
shiftings really vary, however, they have 12 hour shifts and 8 hour shifts. if you go for the 12 hour shifts, you'll most probably work 3-4 times a week and 5 days if 8 hours. below is a link for a sample roster:
please refer to page 3: http://www.thinknursing.com/files/pdf/info_packs/enrollednurse_universitytafe.pdf
those working under 457 visa has a minimum wage of 43k aud per year. with this basic salary you are earning at least 826 aud/week pre-taxed (tax would be more or less 150 aud). your cost of living will depend on what state you are planning to live in - some states have higher cost of living than the others. also it will depend on your lifestyle, if you are a big spender or not. but this salary is really more than enough for a single worker. keep in mind also that this is only the basic salary - penalty rates and overtime pay is not yet included meaning you'll get more later on. also, you can claim some of your money back every end of fiscal year thru tax return which is around june or july.
the 457 visa is good enough for you since you are not planning to be a permanent resident in australia. :)
hope that helps. :)
