New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Thanks lecna31. For all those whose going to have their docs certified, you should follow the above format. And as lecna31 mentioned ---The notary's contact details should also be included. Also make sure that the date when you sign the statutory declaration should be the same as the date the notary signs it.

hi branyan! i would like to ask how many months did you wait after you sent your correctly certified documents? thank you and God bless :)

Hi kit/punjabi, I'm just curious, are you guys working already? Have you had any post-registration experience prior to your application in queensland? :)

kit 25: you mentioned you're taking the modules? Did you also take the challenge test before? How did you find it? Would you be kind enough to use other nursing exams (eg. NCLEX, local board..) for comparison so we could have a better grasp of your opinions? Thanks much!!! :D

Punjabi hi.. so it means that they would still assess your papers even without IELTS and give a condition of letting you take the CAS after you pass IELTS? That's how I understand your post. Correct me if I am wrong. Did they give any deadline like 1 month or 2 months for you to comply the lacking requirments? When are you going to take IELTS? I am from batch 2006 but not FEU. No work experience. Still starting. LOL!

lecna thanks for the website.

hi.

here's what was stated on the letter:

"

all documents to support your application have been received. you will be eligible for registration as a nurse in queensland when you have met the following requirements:

1) complied with section 54(3)(b) of the nursing act 1992 by successfully completing an approved english language test; and

2) complied with section 54(4) of the nursing act 1992 by successfully demonstrating nursing competence through an approved process.

"

i think my papers were already assessed making me eligible for registration.

just need to pass ielts and send to them the result and eventually take and pass the competency program.

are you also from manila?

Specializes in ICU.

Hi Punjabi!

I just want to ask for the proper format and wording that should be used for the notarization of the documents if its ok? thanks!

what you read was right. the normal basic hours in australia even in other jobs is 38 hours a week. any hours worked beyond that number is considered overtime.

shiftings really vary, however, they have 12 hour shifts and 8 hour shifts. if you go for the 12 hour shifts, you'll most probably work 3-4 times a week and 5 days if 8 hours. below is a link for a sample roster:

please refer to page 3: http://www.thinknursing.com/files/pdf/info_packs/enrollednurse_universitytafe.pdf

those working under 457 visa has a minimum wage of 43k aud per year. with this basic salary you are earning at least 826 aud/week pre-taxed (tax would be more or less 150 aud). your cost of living will depend on what state you are planning to live in - some states have higher cost of living than the others. also it will depend on your lifestyle, if you are a big spender or not. but this salary is really more than enough for a single worker. keep in mind also that this is only the basic salary - penalty rates and overtime pay is not yet included meaning you'll get more later on. also, you can claim some of your money back every end of fiscal year thru tax return which is around june or july.

the 457 visa is good enough for you since you are not planning to be a permanent resident in australia. :)

hope that helps. :)

uh, what is the possible cover period of the tax of +/-150 aud? weekly? monthly? i visited the australian taxation office's website http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/12333.htm&pc=001/002/046/002/002&mnu=42570&mfp=001&st=tp&cy=1) and found this:

non-residents are not required to pay the medicare levy

so if i'm going for the 457 visa, i'll be considered a non-resident and will have to pay a hefty sum compared to the resident. let's take the minimum salary of 43k per year. tax will then be computed as follows:

based on tax table for 2008-2009, $34,001 - $80,000

$9,860 plus 30c for each $1 over $34,000

total salary=$43000

$43000-$34000=$9000

$9000 x 0.30=$2700

$9860+2700=$12560

so if we deduct that from the income, that'll leave $30440.

did i get this right????? :typing

hmm...aside from this fat sum that'll be taken away from our hard-earned cash, are there any other fees we should worry about?

as of now, im setting my sights on queensland as my state of choice primarily because of the ease, expediency, and cost of registration processing compared to the other states (claim made with the undaunted optimism that one will pass the challenge tests with flying colors, or if not, finish the modules at the soonest time possible. let's gogogo!). and oh, i read in the website of west australia dept of health that they assist in sponsorship of overseas nurses. would anyone know if queensland has a similar benefit? i just thought, if an arm of the government is directly involved in your sponsorship there'd be less risks/troubles in the future, since you're ensured of the legitimacy of the process. i dont want to sound paranoid, but sometimes you can't help but think of agencies taking advantage of you at times since they know you need them. :banghead:

and oh, speaking of agencies...how do they usually work? how do they charge those who seek their help for sponsorship? are they paid a lump sum in the beginning or end of contract? or do they get a percentage from the money we'll be earning as we work?

sorry to be asking a lot of questions, would rather look into some details now while im still on the planning stage rather than be jolted by reality after i'm done with the big moves. please do correct me if there's anything wrong with the things i've mentioned. i'm still on the process of researching. your validations are extremely helpful and reassuring. muchas gracias!:):):)

Hi Punjabi!

I just want to ask for the proper format and wording that should be used for the notarization of the documents if its ok? thanks!

i just followed what was written in the qnc's checklist for overseas applicant.

the doc must bear the statement " CERTIFIED TRUE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT"

just make sure that the name, signature, address, contact #, date are included.

u also have to accomplish a statutory declaration.

in my case, i went to stamp makers to personalize the stamps so all of the info needed would be included in it.

i think this is the best option to avoid ur docs to be returned by qnc.

:coollook:

punjabi i am from davao city. I will be taking my IELTS this January 17 and will pass my documents to QNC once I get my IELTS result.

what made you decide to take the ielts first?

pipol of this forum:

it was stated in the letter that they should be able to receive the ielts results on or before march 15.

can i req for an extension of at least 1-3 months?

should i email them about it?

thanks!
