New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Congratulations! it is really a HAPPY NEW YEAR! good luck in your IELTS :wink2:

by the way, may i ask when did you submit your application?

OMG! i already received the confirmation letter stating that i am allowed to take cas. hihi.

good thing all docs are properly notarized.

i am about take my ielts exam soon. hope i would pass:heartbeat

Congratulations and good luck! :)

So you mean if I have a contract of 2 years, I would only be allowed to work 38-40hours a week for 2 years if I am on 457 visa? Awww...

I have a question about IELTS. I saw New Zealand's policy with regards to IELTS wherein if you were not able to meet the 7 in all bands in IELTS you can take IELTS again and you can concentrate on the componenet where you failed. I have read somewhere that this is also possible in Australia. Is this true? Thanks!

Sis the 38 hours per week is only the basic hours, beyond that is overtime ;) You will not be restricted to work for 38 hours a week under a 457 visa.

About the IELTS, I haven't heard of that one for Australia but NZ yes.

Actually, that is one of the problems of my friend before. I actually advised him to apply for a student visa if ever the course is 3 months because at least he'll have an extra month after the course is over. But a student's visa takes about 2-3 months to process so I am guessing it's a bit risky to apply for that now.

You are right that a 456 visa is only valid for 3 months exactly and you actually have to go out of the country before your visa expires. If you are going for this visa, since it only takes a few days to process, apply for it at least maybe a week before your course. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can apply for another substantive visa while you are there, most probably a visitors visa just so you could finish your course. I've thought of this because, in a student visa's case, if the visa expires before the graduation ceremony and the student wants to attend, he/she is eligible to apply for a visitor's visa just so he can attend. The school will just provide a letter to DIAC to support his/her application. But the thing is, your 456 visa shouldn't have a "no further stay" condition attached to it or else you won't be able to apply for any other substantive visa while you are in Australia.

A 456 visa can be converted to 457. But you have to lodge your application for a 457 visa or any other visa before your current visa expires. Should your current visa expire while your other visa is processing, you will automatically be given a bridging visa (Bridging Visa A by default). If you want to go out of Australia, you must apply for a Bridging Visa B because this will permit you to go in and out of the country without affecting your visa being processed.

I have also PMed you about something that might be able to help you regarding your visa problem.

Congratulations! it is really a HAPPY NEW YEAR! good luck in your IELTS :wink2:

i submitted it last oct 2nd week. thanks

I thought that QNC will require you to have IELTS first before they can give you the eligibility to do CAS? so it is possible to have a confirmation letter to do CAS even if you do not have IELTS yet? really??? WOW! when are you going to take the exam?

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. The letter that you received is a letter saying that you have to provide passing English proficiency examination and not an approval to take the CAS. You do not get an approval from the council without satisfying the English proficiency requirements. You can ring the council and they will have to give the same information to. AFter completing the English requirement, you will be referred to CAS through Central Queensland University. I am also on the process of QLD registration and I'm doing my module. Please provide accurate information for everybody.

You are required to complete the English proficiency requirement before commencing CAS. I have friends who applied since July 2008 and received the same letter saying that they have to satisfy the English requirement of the Council. But since they failed IELTS, they are about to retake it this January 2009. You will not received approval for CAS without passing the IELTS and providing that information to the council.

Whoa! That's great news!:yeah:Go signals from the board are always received with much joy and relief coz the anticipation and anxiety is merciless agony (i'm sure those who went through the grueling wait for the nclex can attest to this :banghead:)! So congrats, punjabi! Now you'll just have to take the CAS!

BTW, will you please share which state/territory you applied for, and how long it took to get to this stage? Also, are you taking the modules or the challenge test?

And oh, goodluck with your IELTS as well. With patience in practice plus massive doses of faith and confidence (the latter ones being the most critical, I believe), I'm sure you'll do fine. :wink2:

whoops, guess we all got excited! haha..that's fine. goodluck still.
