New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.
A bit OT but not quite: :D

(TO: IELTS passers who scored 7.5 up on the WRITING test)

Question, anyone here who took the IELTS and got 7.5 or 8 on the writing part?? Any good soul here who can help me out? I took my IELTS before and got 6.5 on my writing and apparently, I failed the IELTS. that's the only thing missing :crying2::crying2: I passed everything except that Writing thing huhu.

I'll be taking it again next month and I would really, really appreciate if you can help me with my writing. Please!!!!!

I have never seen a problem with your writing :). If you want you can start a new thread re writing for English exams and we can help. Give us an idea on what they require for the written side of things and take it from there :)

@ punjabi

wow that's great. and he finished it in less than 2 months. that's good to hear because I would like to do modules than the challenge test. hehe. does your friend have any work experience? what is his plan after his clinical? does he have an employer? sorry for asking too much questions. just excited.

@samRn

Hi, i want to ask again. I graduated in march 2006 and took the board exam in dec 2006, i got the result that I passed around feb or march 2007 and in my license it says registration date july 2007 so it means i would count from the july 2007 or from the date i took the exam? hehehe.

yes he has a one year experience.

i am not sure what his definite plans are but he doesnt have any employer yet.

i think he will seek a nursing agency assistance. agencies in australia dont ask for any fees from applicants.

Uhm, the only tip I can give you is always make sure you follow the right format - introduction, body then conclusion. Don't go around the bush. Use words or phrases to connect sentences. Basically, my introduction and conclusion are short - like 1-2 sentences only. The body well, one paragraph per idea/thought.

That's all I can think of.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks Aelith.Yes please can you give me the exact info of CAS?:yeah:

Well, basically, it's for Queensland. CAS has two pathways you can choose from - Challenge Test and Education Modules.

Challenge Test consists of Part A and B. Part A being the Theoretical component and Part B is the Clinical component. Part A has to be passed first in order to proceed to Part B. Should you fail in Part A, you will then have to take the modules where you got low scores. Conditions apply on whether you will still proceed with Part B clinical exam or straight Clinical Module. After you pass this Challenge test, you will be eligible for registration.

Education modules, on the other hand, doesn't have any exams. It is more of studying and assessment would mainly be by assignments. The assignments would be essays. Each module is supposed to be finished within 12 weeks. There are 4 modules. You can enroll in all of the modules at the same time if you want. Basically, you will have to finish the modules in 2 years - that is the time limit. So the pace would be entirely up to you. The clinical practice is 4 weeks in duration only.

The clinical component of both Challenge test (part B) and Education Modules will be completed in Australia. It is mandatory for you to go to Australia to do this one. The Board or QNC will nominate you to undertake this in an affiliated hospital in Queensland.

Should you be successful, you will be registered, but if not, you will have to try other pathways - like enrolling in a pre-registration course.

Hope that helps.

The others can help you too with this one.

Hi everyone. I contacted QNC today to check on my application. I've learned that I am now eligible for the CAS and should wait for the letter to arrive. I'm just too excited. I hope I can sched for December 2008 for the challenge test. If not, I'll settle for Jan 2009. It's a very long wait. At least 3 months. Good luck everyone.

good luck kit25, and thanks for the update (so you got approval in 3 months, i guess ours would range from 3-5 months by next year by the time i will apply, i dont have my cert. of registration yet from PRC, only my ID)..

thanks for the info. anyway, i have a friend who's going in january so ill let you know when she gets there....however, she has friends at her "agency" who said that the bridging program is challenging but not difficult...as long as you demonstrate that you are competent...you'll have no problems passing it. im not expecting it to be that easy but i think i can manage to pass it too...ive always put my best in everything and i always manage to be successful at it..thank God. for me it's not the length of your experience that counts but how well you do your job ;) so far, im having a great time volunteering in the hospital and im learning a lot. besides, im thinking...time is of the essence. if i delay taking the bridging program, i might lose momentum and opportunity considering everything that's being flashed in the news right now. so, what im really doing is striking while the iron is hot.

:nuke: btw, if it helps i have a friend who had totally no experience and applied in Perth...she already passed the Bridging course and just got a contract...so, there's hope ;)

hope that answers your questions.

that perth friend example you gave is of great help and encouragement to me.. yes i agree what you pointed out, but of course it gives us additional confidence if we know that we had enough clinical exposure as needed for the bridging program..

thanks.. good luck too..

my first IELTS overall score was 7.5, but my writing was 6.5. one month later, i retook the IELTS, overall score 7.5 and my writing was 7.0.

preparation is the key, i assume too that you are in a review center..

i assume you have a "nice" handwriting, i have a bad penmanship, so i practice writing more legibly for that 2nd take..

make a draft format of introductory sentences particularly the intro paragraphs, middle/body, and conclusion paragraph.. your "introductory sentences" will vary depending on the topics (like, map/direction, manufacturing process, statistics, graphs, advantages/disadvantages,).. if you already have practiced your "introductory sentences" then it will greatly save you time and you will already have in your mind the structure of your essay.. also, list "words" that you normally use in an essay, like "because, due to, therefore, aside from, etc...." so that you will remember easily these words when you write your essay, as a result, you write smoothly..

with regards to the "essence" or "substance" or "ideas" of your essay, that thing we cannot help anymore because it boils down to you yourself if you are a wide reader or listener of news.. the more informed you are, the more you have an idea of any issue they will tackle, you have no choice therefore but to read read, watch news, watch discovery planet..

of course, i assume you have no problem with your grammar, otherwise, you should address it first..

i hope this helps.. just email me if there's anything i could help which i hope i could do so..

Thanks Aelith. And how much will all these cost? (I mean taking these pathway(:heartbeat)

Hi Guys, can anybody inform me of the cost for the Bridging Programs in Qld, NSW and Victoria respectively? Thanks:bow:

Thank you Cioman!

When I went home 3mos ago, i enrolled at Niner Review Center but attended only for a week since I was too busy gathering docs for QLD that time. My review wasn't serious and i regret that. Also, I registered in Scott's english and never got serious with it as well. So stupid of me. I've taken the local board, NCLEX, and IELTS and this is the first time i'll be resitting for a test. I feel really bad. :bluecry1::bluecry1:

Your assumption is wrong! haha. :p my penmanship isn't bad, its worse! :lol2:

I think what's my real dilemma here is that, i'm having a hard time figuring out what kind of essay should i write. if i need to compare/contrast, give my opinion, argue or discuss. It confuses me a lot. I think basically that's it. For the writing task 1, it's my fault actually, i'm too lazy to practice interpreting these datas. Anyways, thanks for the tip. If you have time, please visit my thread re:ielts and post some more tips.hehe. :yeah:

Please take time to read previous posts as this question has been answered several times already.

If you will do it on your own, that is without the help of any agency, you will only have to pay around 1k - 4k AUD including application fees. This is, however, exclusive of your accommodation, food, transportation, visa fees, air fare and any other incidental fees in Australia.

The Challenge test will most likely cost you around 1k AUD and the Education modules will be almost 4k (currently 905 AUD per module).
