New and 'fun' things

Published

Anyone care to share any new and possibly 'fun' things you've seen or learned about lately??

I'll start. A pt under the age of 40 who had no risk factors for anything.. Ended up with a pneumothorax. Came in with CP.

Specializes in ER.

This actually happened to me: I had pelvic pain and had an u/s done. I was told mistakenly I had large ovarian cysts. Pain progressed and I went to ER 3 days later with c/o ovarian cysts. Was told I would get more meds and go home but I refused. Ended up with a Ct scan which shocked the heck out of everyone as I had a hole in my intestines. Not overweight, mid thirties female. Dx was perforated diverticulitis.

Kicker was CT also showed two tumors on my ovary but no one told me until my follow up with GI one year later when another diverticulitis attack occurred. Needless to say had immediate oopherectomy. Luckily turned out benign.

Pt comes in for vomiting blood... positive melena...

then starts EtOH withdrawal...

Crits are dropping...

Pt trying to leave...

Ends up septic, too...

Active GI bleeder w/ history of varices and has to have a gastric tube...

Tubed... blood noted at the cords... already aspirated blood...

Multiple attempts by multiple RNs at OG and NG... impossible to pass...

Attending tries several times to pass OG using laryngoscope and Magills... finally ends up standing on the gurney, straddling the patient's head, a nurse at each side... one to hold the head and one to slowly advance the tube...

My job never ceases to be interesting (for long, anyway...)

Just love working in the ED...

I thought it was cool to see a near full term in an X-ray.

Had a patient go to the optometrist for blurry vision, instead of glasses she got a stay on my stroke unit, she had a blood clot that had went to her eye. A Carotid Doppler, MRI and MRA of head and neck was performed and she had an intradissection of her LICA, surgery was not an option and the poor woman stroked on day 2 of admission.

Specializes in ED.

I had been at work less than two hours. Notice a call from my sister, which is odd since she lives with me and knows I am at work. I hear about two seconds of her call which is enough to make my stomach drop because she is bawling and she would not call me at work unless my nephew were involved. A second later my triage phone rings and the security guard tells me I need to go check a young mom's blood pressure because she is freaking out after dropping her baby. Run out to triage to find my sister sobbing next to my 2 month old nephew in his pumpkin seat, also bawling. Unbuckle him, tell my my sister to chill out because I was now in charge. I bust into my ER with a little shrimp in my arms, tell my charge nurse that he needs a room NOW, triaged him myself (easiest triage ever!) and he was in CT ten minutes later :) While we were waiting for his test results I was carrying him all over the ER, giving him a tour while he smiled at everyone. He ended up having a skull fracture and small brain bleed so he had to transferred out. I clocked out, helped start his IV, then terrorized his nurses at the peds hospital. He is now almost 5 months old and ridiculous. And lucky to have his own personal nurse, that first night I stayed up for 8 hours and watched his vitals. If I can go through that....I can deal with anything ;)

Ok, so my first thought was of women spraying perfume on their hoo-haws. That, while weird, makes a bit of sense. Maybe she misunderstood? Like, instead of saying she thought she need to... insert? I mean, that can't be a new thing right? God, please, don't let that be a thing! Definitely home schooling my kid!!
