Need Advise sewing on school patch...

Published

My wife's school requires a school patch to be sewed on the arm of each scrub top and her lab coat...

I'm ok with hand sewing and with the machine...

Any one have experience with sewing on patches?

These must be attaches 2" below the upper arm seam... So that makes it even more challenging...

Should I try the machine first or just break down and do it by hand?

I just hand basted mine on....Others used iron on fusible webbing..I would not bother with the machine-especially when sewing on a sleeve-I hand sew pants legs hems,too....

Sleeves are tricky to machine sew on a patch unless your machine has a removable piece for sewing armholes, tubing etc... I would pin the patch inplace and handstitch with invisable thread so perfected stictches wont be neccessary. iron on fuse is OK except it won't survive after several washings.

I preferred to use the iron-on Wonder under fusible. It worked very well for me and was easier that trying to sew it on.

Some of the students at our school use velcro. Our patches tend to bleed in the wash so the instructors mentioned this method at orientation.

Yep, I just sewed on a piece of velcro so that I could remove the patch prior to a wash.

Huh, I never thought of velcro! I just took fifteen minutes out of my life and stitched the thing on. I'm sure it'll never win awards for perfection of stitches, but that thing stayed on exactly where I stuck it for two years, so I guess it was just fine! :)

After seeing how bad my daughters girls scout patches looked I think I will stick to velcro. :rotfl:

Get yourself some Badgemagic. They sell it at Scout shops, but I think you can get it online as well.

With the velco, do you ever have a problem with the badge coming off or getting pulled off?
