NCLEX application in NY for NON-US applicants.

I am a nurse here in the Philippines and it is my first time to apply for a licensure at New York State. I'm processing my CGFNS Credential Verification for New York State (CVS) online, but I haven't completed it yet. I just wanna make sure if I'm doing the right thing. Is there anyone here who can help me or give me information on the step by step process of applying for a license in NY state, from CGFNS up to application at the NY State Education Department (NYSED). I am doing the process on my own and just basing it from what I read from the site and the other blogs here, but I'm still confused. Can someone help me on this? One who had undergone the same process before. Thanks!

Don't fret. There are other states you can consider that I'm pretty sure you can land a job on.

Remember each US state has its own licensing requirements. You cannot work in NH, NJ, PA, or CA with a NY nursing license.

Even if NY was a member of the nursing license compact (NLC) (NY is not) a license is only a NLC multi-state license if you are a legal permanent resident of the issuing state. (i.e. If you live overseas you would be issued a single state license )

The market is very tight & saturated in major cities of NY like NYC. There are many new & experienced nurses in NT applying for a few jobs. More rural areas have more potential opportunities. You can look at various websites to view available postings. But remember just because a job is posted doesn't mean it is available. Some facilities require public job postings even if they intend to fill the position with an existing staff member. In addition it takes at least/approximately 6 months for credentials assessment before one is eligible to sit for the NCLEX by NY BoN. A lot can change in 6 months (positive or negative. )

Only you can decide if the costs & expenses applying for a NY nursing license is worthwhile.

after applying for NCLEX, taking the exam and passing it, will it be easy to get a job in NY? i'm thinking i might go through all that and yet we can't get a job.

Don't forget that a few states allow one to take the NCLEX exams without a SS# (the one that allows one to work, not just to drive a car), BUT they will not give the license out until the BON of the state you took the exam in gets a copy of your SS# and verified (that allows one to work legally).

Just know even if somehow the license is released, any and all US employer will need a copy of the SS# card and usually use E-verify to confirm it's a valid and registers on their computer system as such.

With regards to jobs, if you have at least a year or more of paid hospital experience that might help but know there's no real demand for PH nurses like years before.

If you don't mind working in a nursing home, LTC, SNF, dialysis, private care giver, other non-hospital positions versus a hospital job, you might have a better chance, but also, many do require a year minimum experience, as the competition is so fierce, the employers can pick and choose from the piles of applicants with most going to local grads or local residents.

Go in with all eyes wide open!

Update: Finally after 6 months, my CVS report has already been forwarded to NYSED and I was told to wait 4 weeks max for further instructions.

I am hoping to get my eligibility by November and take my NCLEX-RN on December. Stay positive for those who are still on the process of their CVS. It helps a lot. :)

Finally, after 6 months of CVS and 2 weeks of NYSED , I called NYSED yesterday and was informed that I am elgibile to sit for the NCLEX-RN. I am just waiting for the mail from NYSED before registering to Pearson Vue for my ATT.

Hi im currently processing my cvs for ny.i attended nursing school: june 6,2005-march 13,2009.

I printed out the cvs authorization for verification of academic records/ transcript and i noticed that the attendance dates didnt match the date on my transcript.I remember filling out only the month and year but in the form the dates were June 1,2005-march 1,2009.

Do i need to edit this first before sending it to my school or is it okay to end it as it is?

How can i edit it?

Hi! I think you need to follow the dates on your transcript.

Just an update!! After waiting for more than a year since i started my application. I finally took NCLEX-RN last January 28, 2014 and through God's grace I made it! For those who are still waiting a response from CGFNS/NYSED don't give up. God bless future NY RNs!

No. If they accepted your credit card as your method of payment, they will start processing your order.

hi NursePao congratz! ur patience and determination paid off!. Can you give me tips on how u pass nclex? Also, about the application for ny, is it ok if i will wait until my cvs is done? its only been a month since i submit my cvs application to cgfns and until now the status is still waiting to be recieved. Also, do i need to have the course requirement upon sending my application? Where did you take the child abuse and infection control course? and Flamingwallflower, hi im glad u already have ur eligibility. Can u share me some tips on how u apply? What did you do to make your applying faster? i already submit cvs application. i didnt mail my ny bon yet. should i wait first for my cvs to be done or might as well submit it now? i dont have the child abuse and infection control yet.
